Pictures on CD's

Ok here is another question that i need help with..since you all had terrrific ideas and advice from layouts i wanted to ask your opionion on SAVING pictures on cd's and computers.. Ok if saving on a computer do you do back up cd's in case of malfuntions? And / or do you just make CD's of your photos? Does anyone ever make a album around a CD saved of photos? i was t hinking of doing just that with one of my albums..maybe taking a few photos printed and then put the cd in the back of the album....does that sound dumb? I save so many photos to my computer i wonder if i need to clear them out.. What do you all do with yours on your computer do you just leave them there? thanks again chatty cathy (always curious....hahahaha)

I leave my photos on my computer but I have plenty of room to do so. Make sure you have enough room on your hard drive to keep adding photos. I think the CD in the back of the album sounds like a great idea! I might have to think that one over. I also upload all of them online using Google's Picasa so that I always have a backup that way.

I think saving them on a cd is a good idea. I need to do that because my hard drive is getting full.

Your idea to put a cd of pictures in an album or on a page is a great one. I'm working on a page about Steve being a dj and Melissa suggested I do a cd of the songs that he played and put it on the page.

I save all my pictures on my computer, but I copy them to a cd every other month or so. We lost a bunch of pics once before when our hard drive died, so I learned to back them up!

Hey all - this is an issue I am really passionate about - so I had to add my 2 cents.

My mom owns a photo lab, and I've been helping her out lately. They do traditional film and digital archiving - and the #1 thing to keep in mind is CD/DVDs are NOT archival!!!!

A home burnt CD will only last about 5 years, before the encoding will start to erode. A DVD maybe 8 years.

It's Ok to burn them, but what she tells all her clients is to keep the digital file on a hard drive, external drive, or Zip Disk if you want it more than 5 years from now. Or, reburn every few years until the technology improves. Digital images from an eroding disk will NOT be retrievable at good quality.

AND, if you choose to store them online - but will want good prints down the road - Keep a high resolution. More and more clients are finding that they compress their wedding photos to store online, and then when they want prints, the quality isnt' there.

I tell you this, my dear scrapping friend, because I know the reason all of us even do this is to keep our memories special.

So - please please please keep in mind the limited capacity for CDs for storing your memories!!!

Thanks!

I have an external hard drive I connect to my computer once a month and transfer important files to. The I disconnect it and store it away from the computer. I've been hit by lightening and lost everything and never want to be in that position again. Sandy

I back up our stuff every 6 months or so, I tend to delete digital photographs if I have scrapped them already or digitally scrapped them because I tend to forget if I scrapped them or not.

We had our computer stolen a few years ago and everything was on it. Now I just keep program files on the computer and everything else on disks.

Cathy,

How did you transfer your old vhs tapes to dvds? Did you pay a service to do that, or did you get one of those newfangled vhs>dvd recorders I saw over Christmas and have been drooling for ever since??

Carolyne in TX, with hundreds of vhs tapes that I could do without if I could save the contents!

Cathy, I back up my pictures every month. I then keep that disc in our safety deposit box. To keep track of what I've printed out and what I haven't I keep a file on my computer that is listed as "need to print". After I"ve printed them out I sort them appropiately into their files. I would hate to lose them so that's why I back up every month. That way I would only lose at most a month of pictures. When I put the new cd in the SDB I just break apart the old one.

I have pictures on my computer they all go onto CD. Some of our CD's like the ones of our Angel Dylan are in a fireproof box. I have tons of CD's because of the way I save them. There is a CD for the Dog, CD for the Cat, CD for my sisters school events, CD for Holidays all in that year, CD for summer events (all that occur during the summer cookout, park etc.). This way when I want to scrap a picture of say Buddy I don't have to go through all the pictures to find Buddy I can just go through the buddy pictures. Sometimes what I do is print out a contact sheet (its smaller pictures of all the pictures on that CD) and then on the pages write what CD it is and then file that away so when I want to scrap I pull that out to sort through my pictures and then when I scrap the picture I "X" it off the page. May seem like a lot of work but it works for me. For the pictures that I want to share with online friends I upload to webshots or my blog.
