Anyone into ebooks? I'm wondering because we have a TREMENDOUS collection (my dh collects them, mostly sci fi/fantasy/techno, but quite a few others as well, including some non-fiction and some things like cookbooks, etc.) Anyway, if anyone is interested, I can compile a list of what we've got and can put them up for download if there are some that you want... Just let me know :)

Well, Donna, I am a mystery buff and I love James Patterson,Tony Hillerman,Patricia Cornwell,Tess Garritson,Faye Kellerman and o and on LOL. I have also read all of Stephen King,Dean Koontz, and Robin Cook's books. I just love to read and read hundreds a year. I will read anything I can get my hands on. I love owning books, I am not satisfied with just borrowing them from the library, I have to buy them!! My DH tolerates this obsession as well as he does my scrapbooking. He is my best enabler of both addictions. I get gift certificates to book stores as well as gift certs to scrapbook stores from my family and friends. LOL I am easy to shop for.

Sorry you had such a bad experience here (especially with Gareth) :(. I live in the Baton Rouge area, which is really different in many ways from Shreveport, but I know there are problems. But then, there are other states that have the same or worse problems than we do.

We are electing a new governor soon. Neither person in the run off is a typical Louisiana "good ole boy" politician, so hopefully the people are beginning to realize the need for change around here. Also, the desegregation case that has been going on since the beginning of time has finally been settled, so maybe the school systems can spend money on the students instead of legal fees. I have seen many positive changes which will, hopefully, continue.

I'm very sorry for your loss and do understand why you said that now. I would probably not have nice things to say about the place I had such a great loss either. Friends?

Cindy,

Where did you get married at? My husband and I spent our honeymoon at Tezcuco Plantation in March of 2002. It was a beautiful place as most of the well preserved plantation homes are in this area. Unfortunately, the main house of Tezcuco burned to the ground in May 2002 and Louisiana lost a beautiful piece of history.

As far as books to read go...I've been trying to think...I read so much that sometimes I forget, you know. One book we had to read in Louisiana History at LSU was about a free black man in the 1800's that was kidnapped from New York area I think...he was sold into slavery in Louisiana. It is an autobiography. I was impressed by the man's writing and the truthfulness of the slave side of the story. It is called "Twelve Years a Slave" and it is written by Solomon Northup. If you want to read it and can't find it, let me know. I'll send you a copy. It is published by LSU Press, so I'm not sure how widely it was released.

There is also "Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood" and "Little Altars Everywhere" by Rebecca Wells. It gives a good picture of life in Louisiana back in the 60's, but some of it I'm not quite sure about. But then, my family is not quite as crazy as hers nor are we Catholic.

If I think of any others, I will let you know.

Selena,

We were married at The Castle Inn, a haunted B&B in the Garden District on 4th St. right off of St. Charles Ave. We spent a week there, and yes we had a few "ghostly" experiences!

Thanks for the tip on the Solomon Northup book. Amazon sells it so I will have to put it on my wish list! I love the bookstores in NO. They always have a whole section dedicated to LA fiction. I must have bought about 10 books while we were there.

I have read Little Altars, and own but have yet to read Divine Secrets. I even loved the movie. Have you read "Cane River" by Lalita Tademy? It is based on her family history beginning with her Great great grandmother who was a slave on a Creole plantation.

Thanks for your suggestion,

I just recently started "collecting" ebooks. Microsoft has had three books a week for free download on their reader site and I can't help myself. They all look so interesting and it's so neat to just have it up on the screen and not have to worry about crinkling a page; I'll have to get a notebook or palm pilot soon, so I can take the books with me. But I'd really like to see what you have, I'm always looking for a new read, or cookbook. But that's a whole nother addiction. :)

Ok, answering several questions at once...

Well, as far as where my dh gets them, it's don't ask don't tell :) Really, it's mainly from newsgroups, p2p networks (like Limewire) and friends I think, but I just know that he's got tons.

As far as reading them, I read them on my office computer, but he reads them on his handspring/palm. He's an even more avid reader than I am.

As far as what format... it varies. Most are in text, rtf or html format, but some are also in lit format and a couple others I think.

I'll get the list together tomorrow and post it... Fair warning though, we're talking about probably 30 GIG of ebooks... :)

Fantasy fiction is the key. I've been reading Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series since high school (long series!). I love anything by Terry Brooks and the in the Dragonlance Series.

I also find myself drawn to Anne Rice and Stephen King.

For non-fiction or business areas, you can't beat Faith Popcorn!

AAhhh!! Another Robert Jordan fan! That series, imo, ranks right up there with Lord of the Rings.

Although of late, I just want him to get on with it! ;-) I think he's stuck. he knows how he wants it to end, but not how to get there without leaving tons of loose ends. I guess its the downfall of writing such a complex series.

Nice to know there are others out there! ;-)
