OT: Frustrated For Elizabeth

HI All,

My mother has never ever been a hands on kind of mother. It has been a bone of contention for me ever since I was three years old and had to make my own pbj sandwich. My sister has been fighting (and winning) basil cell skin cancer and needs another proceedure on Friday. We're running out of ideas for child care for Sarah. I don't have any vacation time or sick time available. I need to have my lump removed on Monday (today was a consult).

We've asked:

  • neighbors (2 that beth trusts)
  • my best friend's wife (she has to work)
  • old neighbor (9:45 is too early for her so no)
  • Aunt (too far, yet she wants to be more in our lives LOL)
  • My mother (maybe)
  • Church (minister offerred a woman who Beth doesn't exactly like but I said "oh brother")
  • God Mother (no)
  • Me (in a heartbeat but no more vacation time)
  • Larry (no because he doesn't change diapers on his nieces, long story)
  • Sarah's Daddy (he would but because there hasn't been any overtime, money is really tight)

Anybody else got any ideas? She lives in Patchogue. Sarah's Nursery School is an option but it is only open until 12:30 p.m. and she doesn't know if it has space for her.

Elizabeth is very sad and says that God isn't picking up the telephone as she keeps calling him and is getting a busy signal. I told her that God is on the phone trying to find her help. At least she half- heartedly laughed.

Hugs, Kate

HI April,

Thanks for the idea of craigslist but based on my experience with craigslist it isn't very reliable in NYC and plus I'd want them fingerprinted and background checked through my office before I'd let a stranger watch Sarah.

check your area craigslist.org I spotted a few on there that say they have references and experience. You can call them and go check out their places too...

Have you checked around for drop in childcare centers? They are licensed centers that take children on an as needed basis.

This doesn't really help the immediate need, but she should consider joining or starting a babysitting coop. It doesn't cost anything and there is usually a pool of 20 families or so who can babysit. I can't imagine not having my babysitting coop. HTH

What about checking with a local High School? I know we're back to strangers, but it sounds like you're going to be forced into it. Our high school has volunteer hours and offsite work hours. The volunteer hours have to be done with someone that is not your family. Have you seen any teenagers in the neighborhoods? I get asked from time to time by neighbors I've just seen in passing if my teenagers babysit. What about a leaving a note where your sister is getting treatment. There might be other patients that need childcare as well. Do a trade. I'm not trying to give you crazy ideas. I know you guys are us against a wall and in a difficult situation. I'm just trying to help you brain storm.

Maybe she could go to daycare until 12:30 and then her daddy can pick her up and only have to miss a half a day?

Or maybe go to the childcare until 12:30 then have the one that said too early watch her then.

Opps read wrong. Nursery won't work. They don't open until 12:30. What about any local churches with daycare.

Kate - not having kids, it's hard to say - but some ideas -

Local YMCA/YWCA childcare program? Local Church Childcare Program? Some hospitals have drop in day care for patients Parents of school friends?? Nanny agency? Local College campus?

Good luck - Hugs to you and Beth and Sarah!!! Good Luck!

I went to work today and asked one of my Sgt's (and a friend of Beth & Roy's) what he was doing Friday. He said why? I said that Elizabeth needs a Babysitter as she is having another basile cell removed. He said that he has to work but why don't I do it under the "family emergency day." I said that I don't have any time. He said OK.

The Sgt called me in later to say that these three officers had something to say. "Kate we know family is very important to you and we feel that you are family so we are donating one day each so you can take care of your sister and your niece."

I cried and thanked them and called Elizabeth to say that I'm watching Sarah for her. She didn't want me to get fired (which I won't of course). She said that out of everyone she said next to Roy and Larry she is glad that she can count on me.

So thank you everyone for your ideas and suggestions. She is looking into a Babysitter Co-op and the Church does have babysitting but not on Fridays as the church is usually closed in the morning.

I talked to Roy. Elizabeth is so relieved that she has a migraine headache but Sarah is bouncing off the wall yelling to Noelle (the cat) "my bestest friend in the whole wide world is coming, Aunt Tate is sleeping at mine house" I promised her Pancakes. Roy is grateful that he can count on us.

I'm just grateful that I now have the time. I was wracked with guilt.
