OT - Patterns?

I've been to three rockabilly shows in the past month, and once again fallen in love with the whole movement. :-) I'm looking now, for vintage dress/skirt patterns from the 50's. You know what I mean, like big skirts that spin when they dance? Friday night a bunch of friends and I went to the 16th Annual Shake the Shack Rockabilly Ball in Seattle. It was absolutely wonderful! I watched in jealous awe of the couples swing dancing and decided to learn and find those damn clothes!!!

Does anyone have any idea where I could look for something like this?

Jenn *still swinging** :-)

Check local thrift stores, and some antique stores. I find them all over the place, but I buy them for kids clothes. It is a lot of digging, and a lot of looking, but well worth it when you find something out there! Also, yard sales, old women would rather sell the stuff then throw it away, and a lot of the stuff has been hanging out in their closets for years.

My mom was a teenager in the 50's and she said that they didn't use a pattern. She just made a wait band and depending on how full she wanted the skirt depended on how much fabric was gathered and attached.

For a Halloween costume she help me do it one year. So, if you know anything about sewing you could mock one up yourself or get any skirt pattern (what I would do) as a base and go from there.

Yea, I've started looking at yard sales and stuff, but I haven't seen a lot of vintage stuff. There are some pretty cool vintage stores around here, but once it gets to 'vintage' status the price goes way up. That, and most of the stuff at vintage stores is oh, size 8.

I will keep looking! Thanks Soni!

This is exactly what I was looking for!!! I don't know alot about sewing, but I have a friend who might be able to help me. I really want to learn. I am going to try it first for Halloween and then maybe make some for dancing. ;-)

Thanks Lynne! I needed someone to say 'I didn't use a pattern' so I didn't feel so dumb. lol

Find a square dance group and where they get their clothes. You might try a online search (patterns-sewing) or the like. You should come up with stores that sell patterns then you could call or email. My last ex knew a bunch, Langstons was one store chain that has a catalog that carried the clothes. Pricey though!!!

Hi Jenn,

I'd wholeheartedly recommend Folkwear patterns (

many of my friends (in two different typegroups, one re-enacters and the other "modesty maidens" ) swear bytheir patterns. Check under the "retro" section. The "Fifties Fit &Flair" and the "At the Hop" patterns might work for you. Another siteto try is

They sell vintage patterns...Hope that helps!

Hi there.. I bet you are talking about the circle skirts we used to wear!! LOL.. you should just ask here like you did!!! I have directions for a circle skirt.. easy to make. And then my kids went into square dancing and I made their shirts and skirts. Give me some time and I will find that pattern and snail mail it to you. hugs Neets
