OT:peanut harvesting time

I know that when we were at the BARN in May a few of ya mentioned raw peanuts. Well hubby and I are going to go get a bunch in the next few days because they are harvesting them but they leave behind several. If anyone wants a priority box filled with raw peanuts from our farm just let me know.

If you want some and your not from the BARN trip then you'll have to pay for shipping and i can send ya some. Not sure on shipping till I send first batch though.

Let me know...

can you eat them straight from the box or do you have to bake them first?

in the field they are green and raw. you would have to toast them. I believe some people eat them after they boil them. there are many ways they prepare them.

I just saw a cotton plant for the first time and was totally amazed that actual cotton grows on a bush. (I know.......I knew it came from a plant but I assumed that something was extracted from the plant and made into cotton...that is what I thought the cotton gin did). Now you are saying that peanuts are green....... I must live a sheltered life because I didn't know you had to cook them and I always assumed that they were ready to eat.

How big are peanut plants and about how many peanuts are on each one?

i don't know much about them except what I see here on the farm. They grow what looks similar to clover. Grows in a bunch of green leaves on the ground. Peanuts grow on the roots underneath. At harvest time they come and the tractors turn them up to the top of the ground to dry a bit. they then come and gather them. If you go get them from the field they are raw and have a raw taste to them but they are edible. Most peanuts you get in the store are soaked in salt solution and roasted.

Hmm...boiled peanuts. I remember something about that...lol! That was an interesting topic of conversation at the Barn. I guess I thought more people knew about that...On a different note, the townhomes I used to live in are surrounded by pecan trees. My FIL wants to see if the pecans have fallen yet and get some.

heck yeah Amanda! Pecans are expensive in the grocery stores!! Your FIL is using his noggin! LOL I use them quite a bit in Christmas baking.

I remember talking about boiled peanuts a the Barn. When I lived in South Carolina, boiled peanuts were very popular, some stores even had a big kettle of them cooking all the time..I personally dont care for them. Roasted are much better.

My dad has 3 trees around his house and harvests the pecans every year. I still have a big potato bag filled with pecans he gave me last year.
