OT: Someone broke into my car last night

Broke the window and took the stereo and my Tom Tom. Don't know why the alarm didn't go off. Went through the glovebox and now I am worried that they have my name, address, and birthdate since my license and registration were in the box and the case that holds it was on the floor. They broke the part of the dash that houses the stereo and now it won't snap back in.

It use to be bikes that were stolen around here by the dozens, now I guess the thieves moved up to stealing car stuff.

Mine was brocken into once too, what a pain! The only thing taken was my tape case(yes tapes it was a while ago) and the case held 72 tapes. The funny thing was they were all christian music! Barb:o)

UGH! I've had my car broken into, and it feels so violating! So sorry it happened to you! I hear GPS devices are HOT these days. I just can't imagine thinking that way, you know??

I'd call the credit bureaus and start monitering your credit - here is more info on id theft -

Good luck!!!

Oh Man! That really sucks! Tom Tom's and other navigational toys are hot devices right now and the rate of theft just keeps going up. I would definitely report your missing license and SS card as that can lead to big problems down the road. I sure hope they catch whoever is behind this. Good luck!

Most of the kids around here will only ride Haro or GT, etc and those bikes go for $350 on up so they get stolen all the time. My one son went through 6 bikes in a 2 year period and I thought I was going to lose my mind over it. The worse hit was my neighbor who had chained her 2 boys bicycles with an extra heavy chain to the support post of her carport. The sob's actually cut the post to get the bikes. She came home and the front of the carport had actually pulled away from the house. Her sons bike cost $1300 and he had put another $500 and she had to fight with the insurance company to replace the bicycle.

We had some people remove the metal wall from a shed outback in order to steal my sons quad a few years ago. Thank goodness our neighbor saw them out front trying to push it down the street and came out after them. They took off and ran and another neighbor helped her get it out of the street. A few weeks ago the neighbor who lives in back of us had both of their quads stolen.

The police don't do anything, they come out and take a report for the insurance company and that is it.

That's funny because I had Carolyn Arends Seize the Day in my cd player!

If you called the police they made it Petit Larceny (for the theft) and Criminal Mischief (for breaking the window) and you can put a 60 day fraud alert on your social security/identity. I also hope they dusted for prints since the force has damaged your stereo case. Check and make sure that your alarm wires in your car weren't cut as that is why the alarm might not have gone off.

That is why we keep NOTHING in the car. Even my Navigon when you tap home takes you right to the precinct LOL.

I'm just glad you are ok.

Hugs, kate

------------------------- I called the police they told me to come in and file a report which I did. They didn't dust for prints and the officer never even came outside to see the damage, he just wrote it down. They did cut wires, I guess when an alarm is factory installed it is easier for them to know where to cut. I wouldn't have bothered with the police at all since I am not going to turn it into my insurance but I was worried about the possibility of id theft. More than likely they didn't bother with my id, they were probably just looking for money or other valuables.

--------------------- It is pretty safe here, there hasn't been a murder in 10 years since my friend and his son were murdered, thank God because the police here are too busy harassing citizens and writing tickets to actually investigate. The biggest problems are house break ins and car/bike stealing and unless they catch someone redhanded or someone confesses whoever did it gets away with it.

----------------------- I'm just glad you are ok.

The theives got my Irish CD and took my dog's stuff toy. A week later the toy showed up on my lawn. What ever they did to it, the dog would not touch it. So I've enclosed a couple of Irish curses that you can wish upon them!

May those who love us, love us. And those that don't love us, May God turn their hearts. And if He doesn't turn their hearts, May he turn their ankles, So we'll know them by their limping.

May the curse of Mary Malone and her nine blind illegitimate children chase you so far over the hills of Damnation that the Lord himself can't find you with a telescope.

Remember when you activated your Tom Tom? I wonder if you can trace it through their website. I wonder if they can tell if it is on or not. Just wondering.

Great idea Kate. I didn't activate it my BIL did everything as it was a birthday surprise. I just left a message on their answering machine to see what I have to do.

Thanks.

Ugh I really feel for you! I had my car broken into a few years ago too - they took all the change from my ashtray and my radar detector... the worst part was that the radar detector was a present from my (now) husband when we were dating and it was such a GREAT gift, so it had sentimental value to me. I felt so violated - what makes people think they have the right to just take what they want even if it belongs to someone else?! That seems like no way to live life!

Best wishes in finding out who done it and I hope it is not too much hassle to replace everything!

p.s. i can relate to the type of music you have in your car determining what they steal...the theives didn't even touch my CDs - i'm assuming they saw Celine Deon and Randy Travis and said "nevermine!" =)

Poor you! It is such a pain when things like that happen. I would really alert the credit bureau's and have a watch put on your credit.

DH had his car broken into a couple of days after XMas this past year. The only reason they brokd in was to get his Garmin. We didn't even have to call the cops, the sherrif's deputy was just coming down the street looking for other victims. He actually did dust for prints and they called 3-4 times after that asking additional questions and giving DH more details on how things were going. I don't think they eveer caught the guys.

Hope they catch the theves! M-C

I remember M-C you talking about how the Garmins and the like were a hot stealing item. I have a friend in Portland, who got one. She had just moved there last fall and her MIL bought them one to get around the new town. Before I could warn them to not leave it in the car it was already stolen.

It's been years since my car was broken into. Probably about 10. The police had zero interest in coming to investigate. Didn't even show much interest in hearing about the theft. I think I even heard the yawn on the phone. :) They gave me a report number to give my insurance company and that was it.
