OT: Update on the fostering

A while ago I posted about the dilemma DH and I faced regarding my nephew and continuing to care for him.. After much discussion, we decided that we would take up the challenge and foster him permanently... for those of you who don't know, he has been living with us for the past 9mths. He's a lovely little boy, but it has been a very tough road for us all. Anyway, to cut a long story short, we had a case conference last friday with Dept. of Community Services to discuss the "long term" plan. It was decided that guardianship be offered to DH and I until he turns 18yrs. He is 9yrs now. Now we just have the formalities to go through. A placement assessment is to be done by the dept, and the matter has to go to court for the judge to give the final say.

All in all though, we are hopeful that everything will work out well.

He is so settled at the moment, and has been so caring and helpful - it's a nice change! Thankfully, it seems, gone are the days of his terrible violent tempers and swearing outburts!!! (I certainly don't miss them).

Anyways, I thought I'd share that piece of news with you all... it's BIG news for us. I'll let you know how it works out. The matter has to be finalised before 20/12 I was told last week, 'cos that's when our temporary care agreement expires... they better get cracking then I say.

*fingers crossed*

Thanks Barb, Yes we are really looking forward to our first Christmas as a "family"! We're taking him to have his photo with Santa this weekend, and he has already emailed a letter to Santa and got a reply... having a child in the house really brings the magic alive! It's great. Cec...xxx

Thanks Judy, It was a really hard decision to make, not made lightly! But at the end of the day, we believe it's the right one! We have made much progress with him already this year, and with our continued support and guidance, things can only get better from here. Cec...xxx

Thanks M-C, it means a lot to us too... it has brought so much joy into our house having a child there. I'm really looking forward to the years to come, however many trials that may be before us, we'll be ok in the end.

Yeah he has adjusted Deb, don't get me wrong, we still have our moments... and will always have moments, but the main thing is he is making constant progress. Cec...xxx

How wonderful for you and you nephew. My brother and his wife have custody of my sister in law's niece and nephew. It has been the best thing all around for those kids. I'm sure your situation will work out like that, also. Kids are much better behaved when they feel someone truly cares for them.

Thanks Selena, He's a lot more settled here, and a lot of that has to do with the fact that he feels secure here. It's a very exciting time for us all.

How wonderful for your family! Sounds like you two made the right decision, especially now that your DN has settled in. I'm sure that there will be some rough patches down the road (there are always some no matter what!) but you and your DH have what it takes to help guide DN. Your nephew is blessed.
