OT: You're not going to believe this

HI.

I went to upload to CVS the photos from Larry's trip to North Carolina (which was an early birthday present so he could visit his sister and two nieces -- alyssa and nicole).

Guess what, the repair guy never reinstalled the disk drive or gave me back my 6 USB ports (he gave me 3). I've got my two CD drives but no floppy and I'm short 3 USB ports. LOL

But for an additional $21 I can have the floppy drive back. I don't know but that seems stupid.

I'm frustrated because I don't have the 'net at work and now I can't get the great pictures printed. ARRRG.

Sounds like he used a different motherboard. You can buy an external floppy drive for about $20 and use it with other pc's. You can also buy a usb 2 card on ebay for a few bucks and you'll have plenty of ports.

BUT THAT ISN'T THE POINT. Why should I have to dish out more money for something I already had. If he could put some of the hardware on the motherboard why not all of it. I'm not made of money. If I was Iw ould have bought a brand new computer and called it a day. the compaq was only 2 years old.

On most computers today the usb controller is integrated on the motherboard. If you had a pci card for usb then I would question why it wasn't reinstalled but if not, the mobo determines how many usb ports there are. I have a pc with 4 usb ports and another one with 7 built in. I'm not sure why the floppy was removed as the controller for that is standard and it would only be a matter or reconnecting it to the mobo. If you have the floppy drive I could probably walk you through reconnecting it provided that the floppy drive was not the source of your computer problem.

Oh that is just wrong of that repair guy to do that. DH is shocked, too. DH wants to know if he physically took the floppy drive out of your computer. If so, DH says it's theft. DH would have his butt fired from work if he ever did something like that to a customer! By the way, DH also says to make sure the repair guy isn't trying to sell you a USB port floppy drive, since that will use up another of your USB ports. IMO, if the guy took the floppy drive out of your computer in order to work on the 'puter, than he should have put it back, and plugged it in....idiot repair guy.

The computer guy physically took the tower out of my home to his repair shop and returned to me a new tower without the parts mentioned.

I went to the police department and filed a theft report and reported him to the Consumer Affairs Department of NYC. He claims that the original floppy drive wasn't compatible with the new motherboard -- which is funny since my original CD/DVD players work just fine with it.

I may come across as naive' but that is just the mask I wear. LOL. I'm so annoyed.

I think that guy is yanking your chain, most floppy drives connect rite to the motherboard and use a universal cable. My computer only had a couple USB ports so I just purchased a 4 port hub for about $5 at my local computer store and it works fine for most things. Most new computers come with no floppy yet there is a place on the board to plug in the drive, probably another ploy to get you to pay for something. I would give the guy a call and ask for the floppy drive and cable out of your old computer and you can more than likely install it in the one you have now.

??? Just a thought but if I were going to steal something from a clients pc the last thing it would be is the floppy drive

...especially since the client would notice that it was no longer there. If it is a new tower it is very possible that it doesn't have a floppy, none of the new computers have them and it would probaby require a bracket and faceplate at the very least to add one. > I may come across as naive' but that is just the mask I wear. LOL. I'm > so annoyed. > You do not come across as naive at all.

Glad to see you back Kate. He should have returned any parts he could not put in not kept them without your permission. WTG Standing up for yourself.

Whether or not the floppy is compatible with the new tower and motherboard, I don't know. I can't answer that. But even if it wasn't, he had a responibility to return the original items back to you, whether he could use them in the new tower or not. That is, unless you told him you didn't want them back if he couldn't use them, or there was a contract involved that said all unused items would be kept by him. I know when DH or any of his coworkers swap out any type of computer hardware for a customer, they return the old hardware to the customer. It's part of what they're supposed to do, and the customers expect it. WTG Kate for standing up for yourself!
