Not really OT - Going to Scotland/Yorkshire

Hi, its been a while since I've had a chance to post. So HB to all those I've missed. Hugs and Rainbows to all those who need them. I have been reading the posts (at work) but couldn't reply cos our work server wouldn't let me. But I know there are a few who have needed thoughts and prayers and they've been coming your way from Down Under. BUT the reason for my post today - We are heading to Scotland in 12 days (not that I'm counting). We will have not quite 3 weeks in Scotland and Yorkshire. Some of the visit is to meet my DF's family. DF came out to Australia in 1949 and never went back. He lost touch with his only brother and they didn't speak for nearly 50 years. By that time DF wasn't well enough to make the trip back and he has since passed on, so this trip is pretty special for me. I have one uncle and 2 cousins and their families to meet for the first time. But I am also hoping to squeeze in a bit of S.E.X, so where do I find the LQS's? We fly into Glasgow, head up to the Isle of Skye, down to Arbroath and Edinburgh, then on to York before heading back to Glasgow via the Lake District. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Take care and TIA

Hi Heather, York was my childhood home and it is now the home to THE quilt museum!!

I hope that you'll have time in your schedule to visit - it seems to have some interesting display topics this summer. If you do get there, I expect to read all your news and see lots of photos.

I still think that Yorkshire is the best place in the UK!! jennellh

I'm so envious! My late husband and I spent a week in Scotland in 2003; he was ill then with Lou Gehrig's Disease (motor neuron disease or ALS), depends on where you're from as to what it's called. He loved golf so we went to St. Andrew's. It was wonderful! I don't know about quilting shops, but they do have the most beautiful woolen clothing! Of course, we lived in South Texas and woolen clothing is out of the question, so I didn't bring any home with me. Have fun! Michelle

I live further south than where you are going. Derbyshire joins Yorkshire it is south of it. Shirley

- Mandor's in Renfrew Street, Glasgow (best shop in Scotland)

- The Cloth Shop in Bonnington Road, Edinburgh (vastly improved recently)

- Mandor's in Edinburgh (not as good as the Glasgow one - I forget the street, not far from the Cloth Shop)

- Three fabric-related shops a few yards apart in Linlithgow High Street

- For something rather different (not much cotton), the Asian fabric shops in Woodside Road, Glasgow and Edinburgh Fabrics in Nicolson Street, Edinburgh (the latter is also a pretty good general fabric shop)

- Quilt shops in the high streets of Melrose and West Calder

Walk along the cliff path from Arbroath to Auchmithie and eat at the But 'n Ben (which specializes in Arbroath smokies). The red sandstone cliffs are one of the most spectacular landscape features in Scotland.

On your way from Arbroath to Edinburgh, stop off and look round the Verdant Works jute factory museum in Dundee. It'll take you a lot longer than you think, the place is fascinating.

If you're going through Biggar, look in the museum at the amazing pair of military-themed patchwork wallhangings made by a local man in the mid-19th century. (There's some old patchwork in the Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh, but nothing in that league).
