Oktoberfest in Germany - NOT OT

DH and I are taking a vacation and going to Germany next month for Oktoberfest. He was in Germany 4 years while in the military and I've never been. I am so excited and looking forward to it. We're flying business/first class woohoo and have a layover in Amsterdam going and coming home. We're renting a car so we can get out and do some site seeing. We hope to get down to Austria and Switzerland but we'll see.

Now my questions that will keep this on topic. Are there any fabric/quilt shops in Munich that I can pick up some fabric? Are there any in Austria and Switzerland? We won't be going deep into those two countries due to time restraints. But I really want to pick up some fabric from over there, just don't know where to go. So I'm hoping all you brilliant ladies in here will have some ideas to share with me. I told DH that if I have to I'll buy a cotton dirndl and bring it home to cut up into quilt squares. He laughed at me. Anyway, if anyone has any ideas or suggestions please let me know.

Hugs, Kim

I bet Roberta in D can help.

We lived in Germany from 1970-73, and would love to see it again! How long will you be there? Munich is practically next door to Innsbruck and Salzburg in Austria. We lived just outside of Rothenburg o.d. Tauber (south of Wurzburg and west of Nurnberg) which is certainly one of the most charming towns in a country filled with charm. Practically every town has a brewery, so be sure to try the local beers on your way to Oktoberfest. They'll all spoil you for American beer! Fall is beyond gorgeous there, with lots of blazing orange maple.

If I remember right, there are beautiful fabrics there, although rather expensive. Do you sew clothes? I think there are lovely woolens.

Be sure to take lots of pictures!

(Can you tell I'm envious??)

I can't help at all, Kim, but I'm *wildly* jealous! Have a wonderful time and tell us all about it! :)

You can certainly buy dirndl fabric, lots of people make their own. And there's one German fabric manufacturer still in business AFAIK:

Otherwise, quilt stores sell mostly US imports at 2-3 times the price. We'll have to do a meet and greet in Munich, a fabric shopping tour while your DH is otherwise occupied. Unless of course he likes fabric shopping, I'm all in favor of fabric-loving guys.

I'm jealous!! We lived in Germany for five years, and attended the Okterberfest twice. We had such a good time there. We ended up at a table with people from at least 4 countries, and sang, and laughed, and drank beer, of course!

The only fabric I bought back then was lace fabric for drapes...........it's gorgeous, and easy care! When we moved to the States, I had pinch pleated drapes made from it for the dining room and living room.

Have a great time!

Howdy!

And the Lebkuchen store; don't miss that, w/ Roberta. Roberta & Quilting & Lebkuchen- a great combo of reasons to go to Munich.

R/Sandy- noting that Oktoberfest is in Sept. in München ...which made for a great visit in October...

I certainly will Sandy. We are both really looking forward to it. This will be my first time ever out of the states, with the exception of a one day trip into Mexico at Nogales. Even though I don't drink, I'm looking forward to tasting some of the German brew too.

No, Heidi, I don't sew clothes anymore, just quilts. I'm really looking forward to Germany though. Thanks for the insight and info. I need all I can get.

Completely by accident I found a quilt store when we passed through Munich last year... or maybe my quilt-store radar was working well! :) Anyway, they were having a small quilt exhibit in the workshop behind the store and I kept the postcard for it. The store is called "Quilt und Tektilekunst" and it's near the food market close to the main square in downtown Munich. I googled the address and came up with Sebastiansplatz 4, 80331 Munchen. Some of the best advice we got was to read Rick Steves' "Europe Through the Back Door", to buy our own copy and take part of it w/ us as we traveled. His best advice: be a friendly, temporary local, wherever you go.

Knowing that we knew a couple of people nearby made me more comfortable about being out in The World, and meeting up w/ Roberta & husband was a delightful bonus. We brought home some of the Westfalenstoffe; actually, we shipped it home via the post office (along w/ a goodly supply of chocolate); we shipped home most of our extras, traveling w/ just a couple of backpacks. Lady postal worker was very helpful. ;-)

Heidi, we fell in love w/ Rothenburg o.b.T., which is where I found the German fabric at the lqs:

it the first day we were there; closed Wednesday, but worththe wait ;-> ).

Enjoy your trip, Kim. Give Roberta a hug for me. And be prepared: there just isn't enough TIME to enjoy it all on the first trip, so you'll want to go back. ;-)

Cheers! R/Sandy - noting that Rick Steves' book nets you a discount at many area stops he mentions ;-)

Oh yes Sandy, I really enjoy watching Rick Steves show on tv. I've ordered some of his booklets already. I've actually learned a lot from his website. I do hope to meet up with Roberta and her hubby. Thanks for the suggestions, it just confirms my belief that Rick Steves is a good one to follow.

Roberta, would you email me at snipped-for-privacy@hotmail.com please? I tried to email you but it bounced. We get to Munich on 9/18 and leave on 9/25. So what kind of trouble can we get into in that period of time? LOL.

Thanks Mike. I will print this out also and take it with me. If it's still there and we happen to be in that area, trust me, I'm sure DH or I one will find it. I'm lucky that I have a husband who wholeheartedly supports and participates in my fabric/quilting obsession, sometimes reluctantly though.

Hoist an Oktoberfest Bier for me while you are there, Kim. We went to Oktoberfest on our first Anniversary, and have returned a few times. Munchen is a beautiful city.

When you see price of Dirndl you will realize you do NOT want to cut it up! Look for aprons, table linens, and bedding instead, if you just can't get to a fabric department or shop.
