Just so everyone knows, raisins (and grapes) can cause a toxic reaction in dogs.

OMG thank you for letting me know. I occasionally give Krupa, our border collie, peanuts and raisins. I will stop that immediately.

Thank you for sharing about the raisins and grapes. I don't feed our dog raisins or grapes but I'm sure if I had them on hand I would. I didn't know they were toxic. OMG!

Tammie I am so sorry to hear about your friends dog. I will say a pray for them. For card ideas I have a stamp of a happy dog with angel wings that I can stamp for you and send you. Other then that I have no ideas.

They're not toxic to ALL dogs, and they're not toxic ALL the time... it took years for vets to figure out what was causing kidney damage in otherwise healthy dogs. So now they're on the 'no-no' list like chocolate...

Almost everyone knows that chocolate is harmful to pets, but here are a few others:

onions macadamia nuts raisins grapes xylitol (used in sugar-free candy)

I have also heard that avocados are to be avoided, but the folks that make Avo-Derm dog food dispute this.

I am sure there are others to be added to this list, but these are some of the common ones to avoid.

Actually chocolate isn't deadly unless given in large quantities. It has a chemical that is like caffeine called Theobromine. In reality large amounts of chocolate for any living thing is dangerous. And what do dogs do.... eat large quantities. My 8 pound dog ate 32 Reese's Peanut Butter cups, so I did research to see if I needed to rush her to the Vet. She was fine. My 25 pound dog pulled at 2 pound bag of chocolate chips off the counter. Fortunately, I had used about half of it in baking and found her when she had eaten about 6 ounces of chocolate. (yes I weighed it) Again she was just fine. (kept a close eye on her) There was a chart online that said if you dog weighs this much and has eaten this much chocolate rush straight to the vet. In both my case neither dog had eaten enough to make them sick.

I've given my dogs grapes and they too were too smart to eat them. My folk's farm dogs pick fruit off of the trees to eat and dig in the garden and eat vegetables. They are so fat from foraging for their own food.

While it won't harm dogs, philodendron, a very popular house plant, can be deadly to cats. English ivy can make them sick. I think there are several other plants we should be careful with, as well.

They said he had eaten a ribbon twice his length with caused ulcers from his throat to his back end. The nuts caused pancreaitis. He is being fed intervenously with some sort of milky liquid food. The vet was off work today but was worried about him so she took him home with her so she could watch him more closely. He is not out of the woods yet but it was great to hear something positive. Thanks for caring Crystal!

Oh geez. That sounds horrible! It seems like something that can be cured though...with patience and care. It's good that Chewy has a vet that really cares.
