Gimp is a very good program and has been listed as pricelessware as far back as I can remember. There is also another pricelessware program called Pixia.

Being clueless to all this photo editing stuff, let me ask this. Is all you do is download the program? Are they safe? I hear stories sometimes about being careful what you download and I'm pretty much paranoid about loading anything. If I sound stupid it's because, as I said before, I'm clueless and paranoid. I would like to have some good software and learn more about photo editing though.

The software that Dave are recommending is safe to download provoided you get it from the source that programmed it. I can understand your worry but if you want some free software that is safe and adware/spyware free the best place to find it is

Pricelessware is the best of the best and each program is reviewed and tested and voted on by the readers of alt.comp.freeware. I have been a member there for many years and I have never downloaded a prgram with a virus, adware, spyware etc based on the groups evaluation. Another great site is Son of Spy

It is managed by an acf member and he is very strict on what he includes. If you stick with recommendations from these 2 sites you will be okay. >

learn. I downloaded Gimp and am completely lost. Finally figured out how to make a new project, but that was as far as I got. I have a feeling I needed some scrapbook kits to use with it. I gave up and just ordered LifeTimez to start with. It has everything I need (at least that is what I understand) and I thought this would be a good way to start. Cathie In OK

I've yet to use a digital kit, because being more experienced I could create my own. If Gimp works anything like Photoshop, I'd start with opening an image file and seeing what you can do with it.

In Photoshop, you can create a new layer, so you can put stuff on top of an image without having it "stick" to the image, and you can move it around and make it semi-transparent. Or you can add text on top of an image which you can also move around an edit. You can make photos black and white, or tinted with any color, crop them, erase parts of them, like cut out the entire background leaving just your subject but unlike with scissors you can make the edges fuzzy if you want, which can create some neat effects if you want to blend more than one photo together.

If you don't feel like you're making progress on your own, this page from Gimp's website looks helpful:

Can you tell me how to make striped paper or how to use an overlay in either PSP X or PSE 4? I finally figured out how to make paper with polka dots by using brushes. I have overlays that are suppose to help you make paper but I can't figure out how to use them or colorize them.

PSP is Paint Shop Pro? I've never used it. I can tell you how I'd do it in Photoshop, but I have no idea if it would work in PSP.

I'd use the rectangular selection tool and select an area that is the entire height of my document, but the width of whatever width I want my stripe to be, then I'd use the paint bucket to fill it with the color I want the stripe to be. Then I'd move the selection over or make a new selection, fill, and repeat until I had the whole page done.

If you don't have a selection tool, but you do have paint brushes, assuming they have different sized brushes and the sizes match the size you want your stripes to be, you could possibly paint straight lines for stripes. In Photoshop if you hold down the shift key while you use your mouse to paint, it will make a straight line.

I have both Paint Shop Pro X and Photoshop Elements 4. They are very similiar in that I can only do a couple of things in either of them. PSP seems to have better textures while the brushes are better in PSE.

I get it now, I read a tutorial where they were slicing a piece from the photo to make stripes and then used different settings to get the stripes the way they wanted them. It was very complicated and I couldn't get past the 4th step. I'm not sure how anyone can possibly remember all of this stuff.

I just learned that this afternoon by following a tutorial on making grosgrain ribbon in PSE!

Thanks.

DH loveslovesloves Linux, and this program comes with it, but when I played around with the program I found it a bit too complicated and limited for what I wanted to do. It's been awhile, I'll switch over to linux on my computer and see if I can understand it any better now and let y'all know.

I was fiddling with TLC Lifetimex last night and had problems I could not figure out or fix either. I opened a new album and selected one of the ones their that are themed.

I did not like the colors of the 'frames' they have an tried everything to change them. Can you? The help was of course - NO HELP!!

I just do not have the patience to read, read, hunt, read some more to learn to do something (I know TYPICAL - LOL!) Guess I will just stay 'hand made" and fondle my 'physical' paper!

Oh, that sounds neat. I'd guess you could select strips of your photo, copy them, paste them in new layers, then play with blending modes or filters.

Well, my method is to be unemployed for about a year and get really bored.

You're welcome. Every little thing you learn is just one more step. I think the most important thing is just not to be afraid of the software. Play around, click on stuff, see what it does. It's not like with physical photos and papers where if you cut it wrong it's ruined, because you can always hit undo or revert and just start over.

I have to be careful because I need more memory on this pc and sometimes it locks up for a few minutes because what I am trying to do uses up too much memory. I downloaded all the actions from atomic cupcake so I have been playing with those this week. I only want to learn enough to make some templates to share with the Scrapbook Max community.

Cathie,

I was sold on the program by a couple GREAT OLE enablers in here as they has and used several others and this one was the most and easiest user friendly.

I agree now with them, but have that one grumble. Most of The add ons they have are great!!

Good luck too and FAMILY, oh my!! This one here is too much already, homies more like it - LOL!
