i think 6 weeks is probably the norm, but some companies offer up to 12 with a certain percent of pay. i know my dsil has looked into it, and she'll be able to take 6 wks paid, and another six at about 85% pay, i believe. something to that effect... lori shay louisville

6 weeks mat leave!! Wow! I can't imagine. Here you have the option of 12 months. You can even split it between Mom & Dad if you like, so you each have a turn with the baby. When I had mine, (20+ years ago) the only option was 17 weeks. I can't imagine being emotionally ready to go back to work after 6 weeks. Not that you shouldn't have the choice if you want to, but the choice should be there.

u mean the company you work for pay you to have a baby?? --- sure what it sounds like wow - i have to wonder if people dont get employment because they are of child bearing age. Im sure here maternity leave just means that you have the option to go back to the same job after a certain amount of time - like keeping the position open for you but you dont get paid. Shaz

My work didn't offer maternity leave since it was such a small company. I was only able to take off for 5 weeks because that was all I could afford. I used my 2 weeks of vacation and I "borrowed" my next years 2 weeks of vacation, and used my comp. time for the last week. I wish it could have been at least 3 months, that is what I really needed. Luckily a very good friend of mine watched my baby for me when I went back to work.

Wow, I do not know how you can manage to do that. I know I was not feeling anywhere near back to normal after only 6 weeks,. I guess the companys have to deal with the hormones if they want their employees back.

The choice is there, but it can be a costly one. If someone wants to work and have kids, they can always budget the money for those weeks they'll have to take. :( Me? I just decided to stay home and the heck with work. LOL Was blessed I guess to not be working at the time I had any of the kids... just parts of the pregnant time did I have work, and not with all three.
