Sizzix warns about "other" Machines

I'm not sure if you guys have heard about this, which I found on the Sizzix site.

You can use a hammer to kill a fly, or a skateboard to come home from the grocery store, but any good craftsman will tell you to "use the right tool for the right job."

By using Sizzix Originals and Simple Impressions Embossing Folders* in your Sizzix Machine, you are assured of the longest life for each. That's because Sizzix Dies were specially engineered to work with the Sizzix Machine.

Other companies who have recently jumped on the die-cutting and embossing bandwagon with unproven technology claim their machines will work with our dies. However, we have received some troubling feedback, as well as other serious questions and concerns raised by crafters about the compatibility of Sizzix products in these machines.

From the initial tests we have conducted, we have seen premature aging and severe damage to Sizzix Originals when used in other manufacturer's "ratchet or roller" systems. They appear to cause undue wear and tear on the dies at an accelerated rate.

The Sizzix Machine, on the other hand, was developed for consumers in conjunction with Ellison, the acknowledged pioneer of the die-cutting industry. Their 28-year legacy of manufacturing the finest die-cutting machines was instrumental in creating a brand of products built on quality, functionality and affordability.

So the message is clear: Don't risk prematurely wearing out, damaging or bending your Sizzix Originals or Embossing Folders in a non-Sizzix machine. We will update you once the final results of our thorough tests are complete. Thank you again for your continued interest in the Sizzix brand, and for making Sizzix the standard by which all other die-cutters are measured.

I must be missing posts too. Susan thanked Jacqui but I don't have a post from her on my thread. I thought it seemed like I'd been missing stuff for a while now.

Thanks M-C. I had not seen the letter but I was wondering about it. Did you see anything on their site that mentioned using other dies in the Sizzix machine? I have heard that you can use the quickuts in the sizzix machine if you have a converter.

I'll have to look into it more. I have used quickcuts but it's been a while. Patty and Tabitha were there. I think we came to the conclusion that three white mats worked better than the converter plus something else. The converter alone doesn't work.

Now the reason that the sizzix dies may not do so well is that the "other" machines they are speaking of are the "ratchet or roller" systems. Since Sizzix uses uniform down pressure, it is probably safer to use other dies on their machine. I even use my sizzix to dry emboss brass stencils and I've never seen one of those warp.

I believe you're right M-C. It took 3 of the white mats. The converter didn't work too well. I have been trying to decide whether to get a Sizzix or wait for one of these machines but I guess I'll have to wait until I can see these in action.

I don't know for sure about what you can use in the sizzix, but you can't use the sizzix dies in an accucutter, or it will bend the embedded blades in the sizzix die and it won't cut properly. Learned from experience...

You are right it certainly looks like it uses a roller, which made me look at the article I posted here more closely. I'm not sure if it is significant, but they don't mention the sizzlets, they speak of the original and the embossing floders. It may be that the sizzlets work in other machines and that it is the size of the original and embosing folders that are at issue. Notice too, if you look at the review on our website (its under Links/Product Reviews/The Sizzix Sidekick) that the new Sidekick will have it's own embosing folders. "designed for detailed die-cutting with all Sizzlits, and quick, quality embossing from specially formatted Sidekick Embossing Folders."
