WARNING: I broke it!!! :(( (Sidekick!)

I went and bought me a sidekick and was trying it out to see what it could do.

It does GREAT with Sizzlits (like it is peddled to do!).

It says it can emboss (with the Sizzix impressions) so I thought ok, try one of the brass stencils we all have. I put it thru and it "marked" the paper, so I thought it needs a bit of a shim added to make the sandwich a little thicker so it would emboss.

NOT!!! The whole thing got STUCK in it! I mean IT GOT STUCK! It would not move, the handle spun around and around and you would not believe what I had to do to get that sandwich out. (I will not tell here as there maybe a spy or traitor in here - LOL!) Anyhow a couple metal pieces also fell out of the base when I pulled it up.

So, MY WARNING to ya'll, don't add any shims to the sandwich! Regular embossing plates are a no go.

As for trying the quikcutz in it, I did not make it that far. So maybe MC or April or someone else that has some Quikcutz can try and let us know over next day or two.

MEANWHILE, i will go and exchange mine I guess. HOWEVER I do not feel that it is worth $50. We are buying the name and the need for convenience and we know how that costs in the grocery store. I would say that $30 would be a more reasonable and able to cope with price.

nada for 05 (unless redoing and adding to pages counts!)

Dave you're reminding me of "Tim Tool Time Taylor"... It needs more power... it needs a shim... argh argh argh. So, sorry to here it didn't work out, but you've taught us all a lesson. Thanks for sharing your travails so we don't do the same.

Man that's a bummer Dave. Hate that it broke already and you just got it. I would be so mad. Are you still able to use it at all. Or are you out the

I wouldn't tell them either especially since they advertized that they were coming out with NEW embossing folders for the Sidekick! I've used the quickutz goosebump die successfully in both my regulat sizzix and my sidekick. Here is my new secret shimming technique. Go to the hardware store and buy those sheets they sell made out of magnetic/plastic. They are sold to close off heating vents. They are very thin and two layers will actually stick to each other. They also keep the die in place. Cut the sheet the size of the cutting mats of both your regular and sidekick machine. It takes two layers for the goosebump. Remember that when you shim for the sidekick, the shims have to sit between the two cutting mats. Last but not least, the widthof the paper you are using matters too. Always be very careful that you don't assume that if it worked last time it will this time.

Deb, you have romm to hide both Kenda and me?

Oh drat Dave! Have you been able to take it back? I would definately not tell them how it broke. I think I'll just put off getting a Sidekick for a bit, though. :-)

Oh Dave! How aweful! To break your new toy :( Honestly though I bet there will be more than just you who go through that... Actually that's why I decided to hold off and buy myself the ZipEMate's cutter... I"m gonna buy that cutter to replace my Sizzix and then buy the roller one for cropping. Anyway, thanks for the info on this one and sorry you had to be a guinea pig :)

Dave, I'm sorry you broke it and I hope they don't give you any slack when you go to exchange it. I can't help LOL though. Typical man. I can just see you standing over this little machine and pushing w/ all your might. Only to have the bottom fall out, literally. LOL Thanks for the warning. When I see all these new die cutters come on the market my first thought is, will it work w/ all the brands? Guess I'm holding out for the perfect one that will. Besides, I'm too cheap to buy one of everything anyway.

Well I took it back to a different Michaels from where i bought it. The manager asked me what happened and you could see where there was only ONE other mark on the plate, so I only told a "half truth" where the die got stuck half way thru. i showed her the metal piece that fell out and she said ok and I got another one.

As for the "Tim the tool man Tailor" I LOVED that!! LOL. Typical man, boy we get no respect, or credit!! But I will have to admit, I like convenience (thus the STASH!) and eaee of doing anything. I want a tool that I can use whatever thin die in. ya'll know the ole line "Work smarter, NOT harder!" So, as a result I am ordering one of those new small ones from Accucuts too - The ZAZ. When I get it, I will test it too.

Ronni, err JEAN, I did try the quikcutz on it tonite and like April said, could not get enough shims in it and am a bit afraid of BREAKING it again!! So in the meantime I will continue to use my Sixzix for them.

Glad that you were able to take it back and it a new one, Dave. When I first read your original post my thought was thats a man for you. But I figured I shouldn't write that since I don't know you to well. I'm sorry I couldn't hold it in no more I had to say it. Typical man. Sorry Dave. LOL!
