your first pages????

I was reading an article on the web about re-doing first scrapbook pages after you have been scrapbooking for a few years - it says you don't often find your style until you ahve done about 100 pages!!! In a way thats true although for me it took about 30 pages before I found out what I liked and didn't like!

But the artcile is basically discussing whether to go back and change the first few pages you did or whether to leave them be to show how far you ahve come as a scrapbooker.

What do you think? Do you like the first few pages you made? What mistakes did you make as a someone new to scrapbooking? Would you go back and redo those pages or leave them as they are? What would you change? What techniques would you use now? And even if you wouldn't go back and change them realy - what do you wish you had done differently?

It might just help someone new to scrapbooking - maybe they can learn from our mistakes???

I don't think I will ever go back and change my first pages because 1) I don't think I will ever catch up and 2) it's kind of nice to see how far I have come along as a scrapbooker. A third reason would be that I can see the trends in scrapbooking right on the pages.

Things I would have done different are:

1) Trying to make every page a masterpiece. I spent hours stressing on layouts. 2) I would have organized all of my pictures and memorabilia first so I wouldn't have left anything out. (I still have a problem with this) 3)Buy> I was reading an article on the web about re-doing first scrapbook pages

Honestly, I have two pages put away to redo, because I hate them sooo much! I suffered from "sticker sneeze" a great deal when I first started, that it just makes me go "what was I thinking???" when I see the page. But those are the only ones I will redo...I actually like the very first page I did, it was at a CM party, and is very clean and striking in its simplicity....I will have to scan them soon to show you all why I hate the ones I will redo soooo much, and why I believe that my very first page is actually pretty good! I do not really care for my first pages that I did, but chose to leave them to show how my style has changed, etc. Hey, 2 years from now I could end up not liking what I have done now, but I am going to keep on plugging along. If it is scrapped - It is Done!

Jane, I think it is fun to see how my style has changed over the three years I have been scrapping. Some are just funny...I got carried away with stickers in my first album. I have done 30 albums all told, many as gifts and smaller than others, but I really don't want to change any of them...because...that was where I was at the time. I like my later albums now because I can see how much I have learned and I have more of a feeling for when to stop Lol

I really don't like the first several pages I did, but am leaving them because that is how I felt then. They are VERY plain and I used those decorative edge scissors WAY too much! I hate those now and haven't used them in years. I'm thinking maybe I should go back to the first one and make a note of that so when people are looking they will understand why it looks so bad. LOL

I guess I think of it this way... Everything has value for what it is. I would never have one of my children go back and re-color (paint, draw, etc.) a picture they had made a few years ago because they are better at that skill now. If I re-did a page or two or three...where would it end? I would like to think that I am always getting better so I would have to do all pages over and over. This way I can see the progress and just appreciate it for what it is.

I do not particularly like my first layouts, and I have gone back and changed a few. I added to them or changed them from 8.5x11 to 12x12.

I agree with everyone - no redoing pages for me! They show as much about me as the contents of the page.

I have redone some of my first pages. Mainly because the first ones are 8

1/2 x 11 and I'm now doing 12 x 12 pages. I also don't really like the way they look.

I used way too much patterned paper when I started out. I also didn't use many embellishments, just stickers. I used decorative scissors quite a bit too. My journaling style has changed too. The first pages don't have very much journaling on them at all. I may keep one or two of them just to see how much my style has changed.

Ok, I admit...I redid my first pages. But I had an excuse...I didn't use all acid-free stuff. *ducks the flying acid-free pens* I know! I know! What can I say, I didn't know you all back then, and I didn't know any better. I used Crayola markers. I know..shame on me! I also used glue sticks, which were photo safe & acid free, but the darn things just didn't stick well and things started coming apart. So, I went through and redid them. Good news is that it wasn't a whole album, just several pages. That's now DD's album and I'm so glad I went back and redid the pages.

If I had use acid-free stuff, though, I don't think I would have redone the pages. I like being able to go back and see how much my style has "grown".

I don't like my first pages anymore either but I don't think I will every change them because it just shows my "evolution" as a scrapbooker. I used to cut out around pictures - for example, cut the whole background out so the person was just standing there and I don't really like that now. Now I find that I just crop and put it on a mat - no shapes or anything unless I think it needs it.

My first pages are AWFUL. I started off with a 12 x 15 scrapbook. I want to redo all of those pages onto 12 x 12 some day.

Most of my pages are white background with stickers but I'm ready to start venturing out and get more creative with my pages. I was inhibited for a long time because I wanted to be able to put my pages in order but I was sticking all my pictures down directly onto the strap hinge page. By doing that I didn't have much flexibility if I wanted to insert or move my pages around and that really kept me 'frozen' and non-productive.

Thanks to the helpful advice from this group I now have a solution for that problem and really think I'll be able to move forward and get some scrapping done!

I won't re-do my very first layouts, but I have gone back and re-done two of my early layouts. I like the first ones, as I tried some fun things on my first pages.

No I would not go back and redo my first pages - I agree with others on this - it shows growth. As to mistakes --- they aren't really mistakes more like lessons learned - First LO was a mosaic and I measured and cut each individual square - didn't know what a punch was

- or that there were templates designed for this style LO - second mistake was to go to far from what I "like" by trying something way different and did not like the end result and still don't.

100 pages? Guess I'm a slow learner. My first few albums were functional, but not very exciting.

The advantage of digital scrapbooking is that I can do both! I won't dismantle my first album, but my next big project is to completely redo it. I've been collecting lots of family photos since then & since I do my albums chronologically, I'll start over.

I was the same way Arleen. I had tons of stickers on everything. They did redo's in the newest Making Memories magazine too. My first pages were gifts but I know I do much better now.

Cheers! Elaine
