an awakening

I have sewn on an older Elna for a years and last year I got a new Janome machine. This machine is so much faster stitching than the older one that I found that my quality of sewing was not as good as the old machine. I liked the new machine but I was not able to get as good a result in straight stiches. What I found was that with the Janome, if I slowed down my feeding speed I was able to produce a better looking stitch than I ever was able to get with the Elna. I guess I can't keep up with the speed that the new machine is capable of. Now I'm happy with the results and can produce better looking garments and other projects with the new machine. It only took me a year to figure it out. Sigh!

I teach my students to sew slowly. Once they are good at slow sewing, they tend to speed up naturally. Learning to use a new machine follows a similar process.

And what you have to remember now is that as your sewing skills improve, you will naturally speed up. It's never a bad thing to figure this stuff out, even if it does take a year. ;) It's always better to learn something even if it takes a long time than to never learn it at all. Good job.
