Unfortunately, due to the vast amounts of spam and just plain blather originating from Google groups (and g-mail), many of us filter posts originating from those places.

You can thank the pervy little pedophiles for the decision to drop the alt hierarchy, or, in some cases, usenet entirely. THE PTB decided to take the quick and easy route to dealing with the problem.

I haven't ever used my ISPs news server. If you don't need binaries, here's one of the best independent news servers:

Gee, DH and I were just going to switch to Verizon. It's half the price at twice the speed of our local ISP.

All I would need to do to avoid being cut off is to go through that website listed above?

Another possibility is newsguy.com:

Fairly inexpensive, and I've heard good things about their service, including spam-filtering.

Just please DO NOT use google-groups, I would miss seeing your messages.

I use free.teranews.com. and have done since AOL stopped carrying the Usenet. Right now I have broadband through AT&T on a package with my phone, but haven't heard anything about them stopping access. Teranews comes out of a German university, used to be completely free until they got overwhelmed, so now they ask for the princely sum of around $4 to set it up. They also have a more expensive, commercial, faster one, but I don't need that much speed. On the rare occasions when the site goes down I just read the groups through (ugh) Google.

I have Supernews for slightly less *but* they were just absorbed by Giganews which does a far inferior job of spam filtering. I immediately had to set up more filters in my news client. Even with regular expressions, it isn't easy getting rid of all the google group trash. I'll probably be switching servers in the near future.

Yup. But note that it doesn't carry binary newsgroups (i.e. photos, music, movies etc.). This is not a binary group, so you're OK with this one.

Not necessarily. Depends on your ISP; looks like Time-Warner is going to cut out access to newsgroups altogether.

"Time Warner Cable said it will cease to offer customers access to any Usenet newsgroups, a decision that will affect customers nationwide. Sprint said it would no longer offer any of the tens of thousands of alt.* Usenet newsgroups. Verizon's plan is to eliminate some "fairly broad newsgroup areas."

Depending on your ISP it may be more than just the 'alt' groups.

suspect we'll see some lawsuits over this move.

While Time-Warner (and others) may no longer offer newsgroups on its own servers, that doesn't mean it is cutting access to newsgroups. You will still be able to access newsgroups on other servers, although you may have to pay to subscribe to groups on those other servers.

I hope people with good suggestions for Usenet servers will keep posting them so that our friends who are about to be cut off will have an opportunity to make other arrangements -- and other than google -- before the plug is pulled.

How about using rec.crafts.textiles.sewing, if the rec. groups are being spared? It's a perfectly okay group, as far as I can see, except not as busy as this one.

they could, but running news servers is expensive. they're just looking for a way to maximise profit... after all, they aren't making your access fees any cheaper even though you're getting less service, are they? *some* broadband providers are dropping *all* newsgroups. if they were just dropping the alt. heirarchy, you could just go take over rec.crafts.textiles.sewing.... lee

What do they say about subscribing to one of the alternate usenet providers around the world?

As I recall nothing other than suggesting those wishing to have access to the now denied groups look elsewhere for such services.

that wouldn't affect them at all, & they can't stop subscribers from doing so. my internet connection is through Metrocast right now, but i've never used their news server. i use my dial-up provider's server. i don't change servers when i take my computer to another state & connect through a different provider either. lee
