Newsgroup Server

This is driving me insane...

Can anyone tell me other than Google what newsgroup server you use to get here?

I've tried to use my ISP as a server, but no luck.

I wanna scrap with you too!

I also use my ISP through Outlook.

I do the same. Have you tried asking your ISP to add the group? They often will, if the know users want it.

news.individual.net

It's located at the University of Berlin, I think, is very reliable, used to be free, now costs ~$13 per year (Euro 10). I used it when it was free and was quite happy to pony up the modest charge. FWIW.

My ISP, Comcast, gets their newsgroups (at least in this area) through a server called Giganews. It has a LOT of different groups and allows a lot of up and downloading per month, though there is a limit. (I've never reached it.) I had to contact Comcast and ask how to get newsgroups, then they walked me through signing up for it. No charge- it's included in the cost of the ISP. Try calling your ISP directly and ask if they have a server for newsgroups.

OK, for those of you who are tired of googling to read and post and are willing to pay about $14 USD or 10 Euros a year, I have joined this server to make sure it works and am posting this from news.individual.net. To make it easier for you, I have created step by step instructions on how to join the server and pay for it and where to go for instructions on setting up your account. You can find the instructions via the Home page, the Links page or directly at:

If this post shows up, then you know this works and that you no longer have to use google! Thanks Barb S.

$13.92 per year - credit card will say Click & Buy, NY NY. (I just got my statement today and there it is.) news.individual.net doesn't carry binary groups, if that's important to you.

Thanks for pointing that out. And I'd like to remind everyone that rec.crafts.scrapbooks does not allow posting layouts, using background images or smiles (they are pictures too) and these may cause your posts not to go through. For the same reason, you should not reply to a message that uses a background image unless you know how to strip it from your own post.

Thanks for understanding!

Not every ISP runs a news server. The first step is to contact your ISP to ask if they provide one (usually free for their subscribers). If they do, then you'll be able to subscribe there to rec.crafts.scrapbooks because it is a standard Usenet newsgroup, not just a Goggle group. Even sites that limit the binary and regional news hierarchies will have the "Big 8" (comp, rec, news, talk, humanities, misc, sci, soc).

If your ISP does not have a news server, you'll have to pay to use a service. Other folks here have posted information about pay services.

There are no free, open news servers because that is what forgers and abusers look for. Occasionally a misconfigured news server will appear on the network, but it is quickly found and innundated by misuse. The owners of such a server (usually) quickly fix it. :-)

If your ISP does not offer newsgroups and you are willing to pay a one-time sign up fee of $3.95, check out

After the initial $3.95, there is no monthly fee; they do have a 50M per day download limit, but if you're just trying to read text-only groups (like RCS!), you'll never hit the limit. Their website also does a pretty good job of walking you thru setting up.

Disclaimer - I'm not connected to them in any way, other than that I use them for reading newsgroups on my pc at work. Also, you probably won't recognize my name because I probably haven't posted to the group in quite some time, but I've still been lurking and reading.

I use teranews as well. I have never reached my limit and read a few other NG ( well , when I have time anyway ) other than RCS.

I tried using Individual.net

I could read, but not post for some strange reason.

Now i'm in a quest for another server.

My ISP is 'Walmart'...aka WMCONNECT aka Compuserve. It's a very stripped down version of AOL.

Hi Rhonda! I was able to download the newgroup without paying. But You have to pay to be able to post! Did you look at the info I put together yesterday?

If you don't go through all the steps and then configure your mail reader, it won't work.

Let me know if there is anything I can do to help!
