New thread on Adoption

Thanks to all who sent congrats on the adoption. Thought I would start a new thread since the other one was about the most fun... I just have to brag about my new son. Today I found out that he scored a 6 on the Florida Writes test given to all fourth graders. Only he and another girl made this perfect score and I can't say anything until his teacher makes the official announcement. He has dyslexia but apparently has some writing talent. Will have to have him do all my journaling on my pages. Hilda

Well I figured he was smart! After all didn't he ask you to adopt him? I am sure that you are just so proud of him! Give him a big squishy hug from me when you can finally congratulate him!

Hilda that is wonderful... Is the Florida Writes Test part of the FCAT for the 4th graders. Nick is in 4th, and I do not remember him taking that test. Last year (in third grade) he was reading at an 8th grade level and doing math of a 5th grader. He got the award for the highest FCAT score in our county. I was so proud of him, not to mention straight A honor roll since 1st grade. But not to steal your thunder. I am sure that you are very proud of him, and you have every right to brag.... Congratulations. I have dyslexia myself and it is a terrible thing. Back when I was going to school though it was not something that they realized, and I learned to deal with it by realizing that it is not a speed reading contest, nor do I have to write fast. I used to have to ask the teacher to repeat something, or slow down every now and then but they did not mind. I got through it.... I still catch myself when I type being I type a lot faster than I write, but the backspace button and spellcheck are my friends.

My insight on adoption... It is the most wonderful thing in the world. I was adopted when I was 3 months old, and my DH was bought on the black market (I tease him about that) His parents paid for his bio mom to have him, her apt, and school, plus gave her money for clothes, and living. I still say that they got the better end of the deal though. Since we were both so young, every now and again there is that hole that we wish we knew our bio parents, but for the most part my parents are my mom and dad. They have been there through thick and thin for me and I would not change anything.

Hilda, No I don't think so...I have to really think to get numbers right. I have gotten used to it since I never knew I had anything wrong. LOL I just always had to concentrate a lot harder and I had a hard' time learning my times tables...I kept reversing them. Now one thing that is aggravating to me is I have a hard time figuring out JUMBLES... I am a puzzle nut...crosswords and other word puzzles and I have the hardest time unscrambling word jumbles. It bugs me for my DH to come up behind me and unscramble all of them in a wink!! LOL I always have to stop and think about left and right, referring myself to my left and right hands.

Sabrina, you sound like you're describing ME! Maybe I should have a talk with my doctor. Funny, I never had these problems until I turned 50 and the warranty ran out...

LOL I think it just becomes more noticable when you pass that certain age marker! I know of a lot of people who have this problem but have just learned to live with it. My Mom always said, when I would c/o about some fraility, You are just getting old ! LOL That always went over well! LOL

I am so glad that you are reading up on it... I myself have read up on all there is to read about dyslexia.... I sometimes believe that Nick has it as well, but no one has diagnosed it since he has done the same as me, and gotten past it... just a lot sooner than I did.. It took me years to realize that I had something wrong, and back in the 80's, when I was in elementary and middle school, there was no such thing as ADHD, nor dyslexia. I had to teaach myself how to deal with all of that... Nick is on medication for ADHD (against my better judgement, but the dyslexia he is dealing with, and well I might add. Nick also has problems with his ears, although sometimes I think it is selective hearing... When he was 4 I was told that if he stood in the middle of I-75 he would not be able to hear a semi drive past him. He is way past that now after having tubes in his ears twice. Nick took the FCAT a few months ago, and I have still not received any of his scores for this year... I am anxiously waiting though.

I don't know when the mem expo is this year... I thought it had already past... email me and let me know. K?
