Bobbin thread not added to top stitching - help?

I've been trying all morning to figure out why my bobbin thread won't come into the top stitching and I'm stumped. I've threaded and rethreaded many times, making sure to follow all of the directions for my Singer 5830C. The needle picks up the thread just fine each tie I've threaded it, but when I start sewing there are huge loops of thread on the bottom of the fabric (the thread is all from the needle thread) and the bottom thread usually isn't a part of the stitches at all.

I've also tried a couple different threads, but the same thing keeps happening. Unwinding old thread from a bobbin and rethreading it using the machine hasn't seemed to help.

Does anyone know what I might be doing wrong or how to fix it? I'm not an experienced sewer, but if I could get my machine to work, I'd sure like to try to do more sewing! :)

Two suggestions:

Replace the needle, and be sure it's the *right size* for the thread/fabric.

Unthread the machine, and do a *very thorough* cleaning of the entire thread path, including "flossing" between the tension disks with a heavy thread or strip of lint-free cloth (if you can on your machine, I'm not familiar with your model). Also use a soft brush to clean the bobbin race and case.

If it's been a while since you cleaned and oiled your machine, you may have a bit of fluff somewhere that's causing the problem.

Are you sure you have the bobbin unwinding in the proper direction in the bobbin case?

Beverly & Autumn,

Thanks, I'll try cleaning the thread path. I had already replaced the needle, but that was no help. I'm using a size 14 needle for a cotton/ poly blend of fabric (my practice fabric). The type of thread I'm using is mercerized cotton/polyester. I guess I could try a different thread that I've used before with success and see if that helps. Eventually, I'd like to sew up a seam on a pair of my son's warm-up pants that are all nylon. What size needle would you suggest for nylon?

As for the bobin unwinding in the proper direction, according to my instruction book, the bobbin should be turning counterclockwise when the thread is being pulled from the left side. That's how I did it too...when I pull the lower thread out (after it's been brought out by the upper thread) it pulls out easily and smoothly. So, I'm at a loss.

I'll try a different thread today and see if that works.

Thanks for the suggestions! Sally

Are you sure the top thread is getting between the tension discs? Are you threading the machine with the presser foot up (like you should)? It sounds like there is no tension on the upper thread. Is the tension dial set right?

Good luck. I hate it when that happens myself.

I would probably use either a 9 or 11. Also, if the warm-ups are

*knit* be sure to use a *ball-point* needle.

Kirsten's suggestion that you must thread the needle path with the presser foot *up* is also very important.

Good luck,

Beverly
