Sewing machine not working

Hi, I am in the middle of making costumes for our church play and my sewing machine will not work correctly. It is a brother sewing machine. Everything is threaded and the tensions are all ok, but the bobbin thread is not cathing in the sewing needle and it won't make any stitches when I sew. I've cleaned out the bobbin cage and everything, everything moves, but I don't know what else to do. Thanks.

Have you checked that the needle and/or the bobbin are in the right way round? Is the bobbin thread in the leaf spring to give it some tension?

Yes, the needle is the right way, I even tried a new needle just to check, and there is thread in the leaf spring. I just don't know what the problem is, everything looks right. Thanks for your reply. Pam

Try:

Completely rethreading the machine, following the diagrams in the instruction book (I know, but even *I* get this wrong sometimes!). Upper and lower thread! :)

If the thread comes off the reel horizontally, check that the spool cap is the right size for the reel.

Make sure that the thread is pulled right into the thread sensor, if you have one.

Make sure the needle is all the way into its clamp!

Also make sure you are using the correct type and size of needle for the fabric and thread.

If this still doesn't work, give your Old Sewing Machine Guy/Gal a call and see what advice they have.

Double check that the needle is inserted facing the correct direction. Then unthread and rethread the machine (including bobbin) following the directions in the manual. Don't feel bad if it immediately starts sewing after you do this -- we've all done it! A miss in the threading path, a bobbin inserted backwards or without catching in the spring, or putting a needle in facing the wrong way -- experienced seamstresses have done all that and more.

The timing may be out. Check to see that the point of the hook passes behind the needle just above the eye. If the hook passes too early, it can't pick up the thread. Your service technician will need to set it right.

I'm having the same problem with the needle not interacting with the bobbin. I also noticed a spring that was not connected as well. There are no signs of where the spring should be connected

Looks like another candidate for the repair shop.

Exactly what/where is this spring?

It is against the back panel to the left of the bobbing. There are two springs. One seems to be much more heavy duty than the one that is out of place. The one that is out of place is light weight but right next to the other spring.

I've taken it to the shop. It is the timing and the timing spring was disconnected.
