sewing machine problem

I have been having problems with my sewing machine. When the problem occurs it will stitch fine for anywhere from an inch to a foot and then it will make a kind of banging noise and get stuck. The first time it happened I oiled everything well and changed the needle abd it worked fine. That was a month or so ago, and it just happened again. I oiled the machine and cleaned around the bobbin and replaced the needle and it is still doing it. My machine has a drop in bobbin and when I ran the machine without a bobin thread the top thread got tangled.

I don't know what other information would help. If I had the money I woul take it to a sewing machine shop, but I am really broke (and the local sewing and vac is really unreliable). Any ideas on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated

Re-thread both the top & bobbin. I gave my mom my old machine years ago & it had a drop in bobbin & every time I went to visit her I had to look at the machine cause it wasn't working right and it always turned out to be that she had threaded it wrong (I yes I did give her the manual with it & had taught her how to thread it many times).

This is even worth printing out, but be sure to bookmark it, too. It's an excellent checklist of troubleshooting techniques to use when you're stuck.

Hope this helps!
