Converting a crew neck into a vneck

Hi There---I'm hoping someone can help me! I am an inexperienced sewer and would be doing this job by hand: I have a dress that is made out of a thin cotton (I think it is a vintage dress) and I would like to convert it from a crew neck into a vneck. The material is folded over so there is extra material on the inside of the neck. Would this be a hard job to do? How do I do it? Thanks so much for any input!!

If you have no experience, you would be best off taking it to a dry cleaner's and asking their alterations person if they can do it.

Dear pkk,

I sew by hand all the time by preference, and I can tell you that I wouldn't attempt to do such a conversion by hand. The "folded over" material on the inside is a facing, and there wouldn't be enough fabric there to make a v-neck facing. I think you need to take it to an alteration shop.
