Need Help In Making V-Neck T-shirt

Hi all,

I'm new today ... and only sew very basic items, haven't made clothes as yet. I've made dolls and other small items mostly.

I'd like to convert a 'round' neckline on the t-shirts I have, into 'V-neck' necklines. I know there's a way to do it, I'm just not sure how. I'd like to get it as straight/even as possible.

Do I need a pattern, or is this something I can do without one?

Have any of you did this before?

I know you can also use sweatshirts and cut them down the middle to make a cardigan. Would like to do that also ... but make it even and looking professional.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks! Dee

Did you look at Google for "converting round necks to V-necks" and "jackets from sweatshirts"? You may find lots of help.

The way I have done this in the past for my daughters, I make certain to find the center front of the shirt after ripping off the band and carefully recut the neckline following any V-neck pattern for a knit garment, make certain you can pull it on over your head. Then make a band of knit ribbing and carefully sew it on, lapping over at the V. Somewhere I had the directions, but can't find them at the moment. Several books, such as the Simplicity Sewing Book has the directions for putting on the bands. EASY SEWING the Kwik-Sew Way also has clear cut directions and is well illustrated. Several of the big 4 pattern companies have patterns for converting sweatshirts into jackets. Most of them have some appliqué designs to add to the jackets. I know I have a McCall's that is nearly 20 years old. I am not affiliated with any of the above companies what so ever, I just have copies of both books mentioned. Emily

Hey - give us a chance Dee - we're good but not instantaneous!!! Give us a day or so to answer - some of us aren't in the same continent.

If you look through the archives of this group on google, you'll find a discussion of just this subject that came up in the last 2 - 3 months - sorry can't remember exactly when it was.
