Fitted sheet elastic, Sydney

Does anyone know where I can buy fitted sheet elastic in Sydney? I live and work in the CBD. I have gone to Lincraft on York St a few times over the last few months but they don't have it. I have also tried the store in Alexandria. The young sales assistants weren't even aware there was such a thing! There is plenty of elastic for drawcords but that is too bulky in the middle.

In the absence of fitted sheet elastic, what is a good alternative? I have thought about getting some 25mm wide elastic and using that. Any smaller and it would be hard to fold in half and keep in place when sewing.

I know it's a lot of trouble to go to, but the sheets are good cotton and it's only the fitted sheet that needs new elastic. I guess I'm just not part of this new throwaway and get something new society!

TIA for any suggestions.

When I replace elastic in sheets I use regular 1/4 inch which I believe is 6.35 mm. (I won't guarantee that my conversion is correct) I start on one side, zigzag and stretching the elastic completely around the sheet and then turning the edge in and sew again. I'm not in Australia so I can't help you with a local source. I usually buy my elastic on line. HTH. Juno

Like Juno stated, I also use 1/4-inch elastic on sheets and sew it the same way. It's only been in the last few years, that I've seen sheets with elastic all the way round. In days past, the elastic was only around the corners, or once in a while across the ends, but not the sides. If I am in a hurry and don't have enough elastic to go all around the edges, I just sew it on the ends, coming around a few inches on the sides. I also do baby crib sheets the same way.

Since I am in the US, I am sorry I can't help you with local shopping.

Thanks for the suggestion of 1/4 inch. I'll use that as a back up if I can't find the elastic I've used before.

Do you hem the sheets before you sew the elastic on? Most of the fitted sheets I have are not hemmed, which is another advantage of the fitted sheet elastic as it folds over and covers the raw edge.

I never hem first. I apply the elastic close to the edge and turn that in and sew again. I don't believe I've ever seen fitted sheet elastic. The only thing that I can think of would be foldover elastic. I did however find this web page in Australia.

Have you tried Spotlight at Bondi Junction? they have quite a selection of elastic. Hope you find what you are looking.

I know I've seen that fitted sheet elastic in my local Spotlight so although I have no idea where Spolight shops are in Sydney, I'd agree that it's the place to go.

Yes, that looks like the fitted sheet elastic. You fold it in half then put the end of the sheet in the middle and sew that - the 2 halves of the elastic with the sheet sandwiched between them. Easy - one lot of sewing only.

Now that I understand how you do it, I will use that as a back up if I can't find the other stuff. I am hopeful now as I have been given a great suggestion of a sewing shop close by (thanks Mary).

You are a lifesaver! Spotlight at Bondi has fitted sheet elastic - lots of it. The only problem was getting there when they were open. This finally happened last weekend by accident. Today I have been able to fix one fitted sheet and I'll do another one tomorrow.

I was so pleased to find the fitted sheet elastic I didn't let the heat inside the shop bother me. Following 2 bouts of cancer, my body has trouble dealing with extremes of temperature and the heat in Sydney recently has affected me badly.

A million thanks for the suggestion.

I'm so glad you found what you were looking for, despite the heat. Have fun fixing the sheets. Juno
