how to prepare ourselves to sew

THE MENTAL APPROACH TO SEWING This came from a 1949 Singer Sewing Manual. I trust all of you are mentally prepared each time you sit down to sew!

"Prepare yourself mentally for sewing. Think about what you are going to do...never approach sewing with a sigh or lackadaisically. Good results are difficult when indifference predominates. Never try to sew with a sink full of dishes or beds unmade. When there are urgent housekeeping chores, do these first so your mind is free to enjoy your sewing.

"When you sew, make yourself as attractive as possible. Put on a clean dress. Keep a little bag full of French chalk near your sewing machine to dust your fingers at intervals. Have your hair in order, powder and lipstick put on with care ... if you are constantly fearful that a visitor will drop in or your husband will come home and you will not look neatly put together, you will not enjoy your sewing as you should."

This is almost the same as the advice given in my two oldest sewing manuals, dating from the 30's amd 40's, judging by the illustrations. It does make me giggle. If I did all that 'urgent housework' before starting to sew, I wouldn't get to the sewing machine until a month on Tuesday!

As for looking neatly put together for my husband... Hm... Since he wakes up beside me every day, and almost the first thing he sees is me looking like the wreck of the Hesperus, I reckon if he comes home in the evening and I'm DRESSED, he's winning!

I agree!!!! I have never felt any urgency about making the bed. If DH comes home and I have on lipstick, he asks where we are going. LOL

-who doesn't wear any makeup while sewing. Too easy to forget, touch my face, then touch the fabric!!
