Look What Followed Me Home, Ma!

...That would be a stray Singer, a Futura, for which I paid the grand sum of $5.00, sans power cord. Brought it home, whipped the cord off the Singer 2010 (which I picked up at the same thrift shop), plugged the new pup in, and it runs!! How well, I've yet to find out. Have to play with it later. The sewing room floor resembles a snake den, with all the cords coiled around towards the one power strip. Have to do something about that before I get bitten. Cea

The trick now is to a) train the kids not to comment on their arrival in front of Daddy and b) get the new arrival to sit quietly in a cupboard till you can truthfully say, on its eventual discovery, "that? No love, I've had it ages"

Cea, How fabulous!

I have to confess to a similar temptation. Check it out:

even love the desk, and they want to give it away free! But you know I can't have it. As for the snakes, it sounds like something to take care of pronto. Safety is no accident.

Good grab, Cea. I have one, too, a Futura 2000, picked up last summer. But you beat my deal. Mine was $10 but did get a power cord with it.

That is one great desk, Charlotte. Are you *sure* you can't have it? :)

Charlotte, the cabinet or desk, is exactly like the one I have for my old Singer. It makes a wonderful table by the recliner and is no problem to pull up the machine to sew because it doesn't have to be moved to make way for opening the apron. Emily

That's a lovely piece of furniture, and did you know that you can put any of the older Singers in it? Some other brands of machines will fit, too. It is so convenient to have the machine in a cabinet like that where you simply open it and swing the machine up to use it. When you are ready to quit for the day, you lower it and put the cover back. That's a nice one because it has all the roomy drawers to store your tools.

Check Ebay and see if anybody is selling any. There are several people who sell lots of parts for older machines, including food pedals, etc.

Thanks for the tip, Melinda! Actually need an additional cord for a serger, too, so I will check EBay. Cea

Yes, I am moving to Paris for a year and I can't take it with me. :(

Now there's another one, very cryptic:

It is such great fun! I was recently mentioned in the Boston Globe. They did an article about my friend who is moving to Iceland with a boy she met via the Craigslist Missed Connections. I was included because we met when I responded to her ad when she was looking for a pair of shoes to wear to a wedding. I had an unworn pair which were exactly what she needed. The friendship is just a surprise blessing.

I think Craigslist is great!

Emily, I would SO love to have it. I love the legs on the right-hand side... I'm moving and shouldn't saddle myself with paying to store it.

I haven't inspected my old Pfaff to see if it will interface with a table. My mother has had it my whole life and never put it in a table, but that doesn't seem to be her style.

Have you checked out Freecycle? It's great for passing things along, but I was astonished today by a post asking for a sewing machine for the kids - a Featherweight, please. For free.

I'm pretty sure Pfaffs will fit. Some people have reported having put a Pfaff in a Singer cabinet.

Surprisingly a lot of people have no idea what a featherweight really is, only that they are sought after and a good machine (because that's what they've heard....)

You'd be surprised by the number of machines on eBay that are advertised as featherweights that are clearly not....model 99s, 66s, etc. My favorite, are the ads for the standard Singer low shank attachments such as buttonholers or zig zaggers, that pop the word 'for featherweight' in the title.... I imagine in hopes of driving up the price. Those low shank standard attachments work on all the straight stitch Singers, not just the featherweight.
