Mounting board for valances

Why is it every pattern I see for valances have them mounted on a board?? Personally, I like something that can be taken down and either sent to the cleaners or washed. I suppose it's to make them appear to hang nicer. I bought 3 new patterns this week at JoAnn's trying to decide which I want to make and all three are mounted on boards once completed. I guess I'll just have to do a bit of figuring and convert them all to hang on rods.

I stitched velcro to the back of my valances and stapled the other half to the valance board they have worked well for 5 years and several times up and down

For my old bedroom curtains, I made a flat/tailored valance. I installed one of those 3" wide flat rods, that projected out about 3 inches from the wall. I folded the valance over the rod till I had the right length I wanted, then I took it off, pressed it on the fold and put it back up. I didn't make a casing because it worked fine as it was.
