Newbie needs help.
Does anyone have this manual for my Singer 401A? I was just given this by a friend, and it works great but I need help operating it. If you have it in electronic form and can email it to me, that'd be great.

know where all the free and other downloads are. Also lots of info on your coveted machine.
Check sewusa.com. (But the downloads are not free.)
Someone on this group recommended it a few days ago, and I not only was able to identify my store-branded machine by its manufacturer (Morse), I found its owners manual, threading guide, all that.

431 is like the 401 except the 401 doesn't have chainstitching andfree arm applications....) The 401's manual is pretty long as manuals go...there is no freebie for it on line. Because of it's length it makes for a large file to send via email.
Cheapest place to get on online is SEWUSA.com -you can download it (downloads start at $7), or try to grab one on eBay.
