We don't normally email replies The answer may be of help to someone else.Having said that, I don't know the answer to your question, Juno
No, but I can tell you want needle *not* to use.
"Leather" needles are for very hard-to-pierce leathers, and they cut like knives. Patent leather is easy to pierce with an ordinary round needle. It would be likely to tear along stitches made with a three-sharp-edges needle.
This is Usenet. You will have to come back to alt.sewing to read the answers.

I just learned that you are actually sewing plastic. Disregard previous post.

HEY, THANKS FOR THE REPSONSES and the rude ones as well. I was just trying to ask a sewing question about patent leather, trying to make a purse for my small granddaughter, and had no clue as what kind of needle I should use and then all of a sudden it struck me WOW I can look online, people who sew would know the answer. I DIDNT realize that IT WAS TABOO to ask for a direct answer my email. SORRY I WONT BE BACK. 1st time here, LAST time here.
PKB!
Be aware that is is normal polite practice follow the social mores of the group you want to take part in, whether that is in cyberspace or the real world. On usenet it's probably a good idea to read the group charter FIRST to find out what is and isn't acceptable, or to lurk and observe for a few days to see what folk do (and, just as important, DON'T do). Asking total strangers to email you information from a usenet group is hardly wise, never mind being basic poor manners...
Smack your fingers! There ain't a charter for alt.sewing....... :-)
There is a general charter for all the alt. heirarchy of newsgroups. alt.sewing uses that charter as the basis for its social mores. We used to publish the charter specific to this group on a regular basis. Dunno who now holds that information... I have a feeling they fell off the wagon a while back. It would be good to dig it out again and start posting it on a monthly basis again.
Lurking or asking is another good way to find out what is and isn't acceptable on any particular newsgroup. This group holds strongly to the tenent that what starts here stays here, except in specific circumstances. In those cases, the enquirer should contact the person they wish to discuss some idea with off group. This happens all the time.
Still doesn't slter the fact that there ain't a charter for alt.sewing. I seem to recollect there was a thread about the charter or lack of one some while back.
Yes, that's why I left your comments in. And added a smiley......
Penny used to post the Posting FAQ, but her last one was in
2006. I have it saved as a text file, and will happily post it on a regular basis. See the new message "Posting FAQ"Beverly
Speaking only for myself, I will be DEVASTATED at the loss of your participation.
In other words, don't let the door hit ya....!!!

In the USA here I sew both nylon webbing and vinyl using a #18 or 110 needle which works very well on a normal as long as I go slow.
