You might not have a thought in your head about this one but I'm desperately hoping you do. I have a Bernina Bernette 334DS. I make lots of things for needy newborns and need the serger to be happy. ( I have another serger, newer and pricier but the 334DS does a gorgeous, soft tiny edge). The problem? The original foot control died. The replacement I bought was about $100. Flimsy, lightweight and moody. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. The question? Do you think I might be able to find a well-made foot control for this serger or is it so old that it's just not going to happen? Please guide me if you can and I sincerely thank you; I really need it. Polly

Unfortunately there is only the one control for it. Uses an odd control. Are you sure it is the control? Those symptoms could well be motor brushes are worn down and need replacing.

Well, no. I'm not sure. The only thing I've found that makes it stitch when it won't go is: I pick up the foot control, turn it over, slide the base to the left and right just a bit, attempt to prize it open and closed. ( I don't know what I'd do if I did get it open.) Anyhow, that seems to motivate it to stitch for a few more miles. Does that sound like brushes to you? The serger was behaving the same way back at Christmas soon after I had it cleaned and tuned. It has behaved for nearly a year with the new ( but cheap 'looking/feeling') foot control. My real and wonderful SM guy inconsiderately moved 50 miles inland after Katrina and then died. OHhhh how I do miss him. He growled a lot if he caught me with a dull needle or generic bobbin but he kept my tools going great. pitiful Polly

That may well be a break in the wires going into the control. If someone can get in there and slightly shorten the wires might cure the problem. Us OSMG are becoming more and more rare everyday. Won't be long before no one repairs machines any longer just toss them and buy a new one. A sad commentary on the human condition.

Got it, Ron. Thank you so much. I'm sure I can get it open; getting it back together may take a little longer. We were brought up to buy the best we could pay for and take very good care of it. I guess nowadays you have to be highly motivated. Polly

Email me a photo and I can explain how to get it open. I have no idea what it is you were sold.

Sounds like a busted wire, bad soldering job or bad contact in the pedal to me, with that list of "fixes". Got any younguns with a VOM and continuity meter who might be willing to look at it for you?

As you might expect, the foot control has been behaving very well since I am prepared to 'adjust' it. Do you think we have scared it? Polly

Of course we have. And it will continue to work perfectly until you have an absolutely critical project on tight deadline.

Personally, I find the best cure for my machines when they start acting up for no good reason is to give them the tour of my husband's truck, pointing out such features as engine size, 4 wheel drive and size of the tires. Then I leave them behind a back wheel to think about it for several minutes. Usually, they cooperate then.
