Solved the threading problem, thanks for the responses in the
Sewing Genie Threading Problem
subject. As one response suggested, I was misreading the instructions and threading the eye of the needle back to front (backwards). My mistake was misreading:
insert the THREADER through the eye of the needle from back to front
to mean
insert the THREAD through the eye of the needle from back to front
