Sewing Vinyl?

Question

I was wondering what type of thread and needle I should use to sew vinyl. Mybrother wants me to sew a new ski-doo seat cover for him. Anyone have anytips/hints?Thanks,Brenda

First, use a teflon foot and check to see if the material sticks to thethroat plate. If it does apply water soluable stabilizer to it. A leatherneedle might be best. You'll want to use a fairly heavy weather resistantthread.                                          Mike in Wisconsin

I did a couple of covers for the back of pickups (what ever you call them).Did the first one on a Singer 401. Heavy vinyl with a cloth backing. Thestuff sews amazingly easily. #18 universal needle and #69 nylon thread. Useda roller foot. The only problem was the shear weight. All up, it probablyweighed 35 pounds. Made the feed dogs mostly useless. The second one was ona Thompson Mini Walker. No feed problems with that. Vinyl has a tendency totear along the stitch line. Use as long a stitch as you can. I wouldn't usea leather needle as it tends to cut the vinyl and could cause a tear. If youuse good upholstery grade vinyl, needle penetrating it should not be aproblem but feeding will be. You will have to feed mainly by hand. This isreally a job for an industrial machine but you can do it with a bit of skillat hand feeding.

If it were my sled.. I would go with something besides vinyl. Maybe a coated ballistic nylon, sunbrella or somesuch.

What would really sounds neat is ToughTek. Its a heavy duty stuff, with excellent non-slip properties.
