Tablecloth ideas?

After nearly 40 years of Corel Winter White dishes for every day, I have taken the plunge, and ordered new dishes - from one extreme to the other. I'm getting Clay Art's Toscana - multi-colored Tuscan inspired dishes, with 4 different colors for place settings, and pieces within those settings varied in colors. Essentially, green, orange, yellow and brown. Square plates! Boredom ends here!

None of my tablecloths, with the possible exception of a plain gold one are going to go with these dishes. To be honest, we rarely sit at table for a meal, anyway, but I would like to have at least one cloth that will "harmonize" with my colorful new dinnerware. I've been looking and thinking -- I think what I want it a kind of homespun with stripes or plaid. I could hem the edges, or fringe them, I think. I've checked the web for ready-made, and looked at fabrics.com for something suitable, and so far, nothing. Any ideas?

That's a great idea, and is - in fact - where most of my tablecloths came from. My stash goes well with my plain white dishes, but I don't think they will be so good with my new colorful ones. I'll have to hit some of my favorite thrifts.

When I decide to make a tablecloth, I end up looking at the sheets to see if I can find a pattern with the colors I want. It's worked for me before! barbara in SC

Thanks. That's another good idea.

I have solid deep blue dishes. I've seen some gorgeous madras plaids and batik-ish prints at Hancock's recently. They're not very wide so the cloth would have to be pieced. I'll probably wind up splicing two widths of the print/plaid onto either side of a coordinating center.

We have a Hancock's here - last I heard, anyway. This is a good reason to go check it out! Thanks!

Where is the Hancock's at? I'm planning to be in Reno this week, so maybe would like to check it out. Karen

Hancock's, assuming they're still in business, is in the Greenbrae Shopping Center at Greenbrae and Pyramid in Sparks. There's a Ben Franklin next door. Yahoo maps can show you exactly where that is.

If you're coming to Reno, you *have* to go to Mill End!!! I just got back from there. It's at Kuenzli and Kietzke. You really will need Yahoo or Google maps for that, I think. It's actually on Kuenzli, which is 2nd Street when it gets downtown. If you are on Kietzke, going north, it's on the left and you'll see a brightly striped building that says CAMRAC on it. That's a video-making place. Mill End is in the same building, which is the old post office. It's a "must go" when you are here. There's a Smart & Final across the street. Definitely low rent district.

I just went to Mill End, since I was "in the area" and found two pieces of fabric that I think will make great tablecloths. They were in the home dec area, and are a heavy weave - thick threads - one is an orange and green "gingham" check (woven), and the other is a print on white, with a sort of plaid effect. Green, orange, yellow, and a brick color. Scrumtious!

Breaking out here - free from white and solid colors and dullsville. hehehe

I guess I left home before I saw this, but thanks. I'll file the information for next time. We try to go to Reno once or twice a year. We have friends that live in Sparks, and we like to get up there to see them. I did go to Windy Moon and buy some fabric and a couple of patterns. A couple of years ago my friend Lynette, the one that lives up there took me to the Mill End and to the $2 Fabric store (I think that one changed name to Home Fabrics) , so I do know about those. Thanks, Karen

Well, then I didn't tell you anything you didn't already know. ;-) Windy Moon is a really nice shop, and I'm glad they're making a go of it. There is another LQS, far south -

I should say that it's "far south" for us here, but if we lived in a *real* metropolitan area like the Bay Area or L.A., it would be "just down the block a way." But it does take me 10 or 15 minutes to get there!
