Kate, that straw hat is going to be charming! Who else would have thought to do major surgery on a RTW hat to change its appearance?

Thank you.

I did this sort of thing first time round as a kid... 45 years ago in Malta I hacked up a Gozo hat to make something for a school play. I've been doing cosmetic surgery on them ever since. Yer basic straw hat can become an 18th C one like this, a Regency bonnet, a Victorian poke bonnet, a tricone, Napoleons hat, Nelson's hat, a halo for an angel (my first doctored hat!)... Very versatile, yer straw hat!

Now I just need some 4" wide taffeta ribbon...

Could you just cut some 4' wide taffeta and serge the edges" Just wondering. Barbara in SC

The taffeta I'm using is a bit thick for that, but I shall experiment. Thank you for the idea. :)

I have ordered a roll of 2" wide, as I need that too! Couldn't find anything wider. I can always sew two strips of that together...

Mr. Esther has a straw hat he just must wear when outside grooming his growing things. Well, he doesn't groom the gators; I'm only meaning vegetation of all manner. He wanted to make this favorite hat last just one more season (maybe) so he's sprayed it with the varnish concoction that I use on my oil paintings. TaDah. It worked. It did not make it too stiff and it does seem to have improved its fragile condition. All that to say this. I'm wondering what fun experiments you might try with paints and such on your hat adventures. Certainly you could change the color; perhaps the texture. Polly
