stay away from the leghorns then! i find the Aruacuanas are settling down a bit more as they get older (they're 2 months now). they are very pretty girls & the colored eggs (shades of blues & greens) are an attraction for the Kid. there is no breed standard color for Aruacuanas & mine don't look anything alike. that's nice if you have a 'pet' flock. the other chickens have bands on one of the pair so i can tell who is who (although Buffy & Willow are dissimilar enough to tell apart without the bands)
i feed hulled black oil sunflower in the winter. there's less access to gravel for thier crops so hulled seemed a sensible choice. we get up to 2-3 weeks of below zero weather in the winter, so i do feel the black oil seeds are needed to keep thier weight up & protect them from the cold.
apparently :) seems to be a few chicken fans on here... chickens & cats & sewing go together? lee
