Has anyone noticed that this item has started to become scarce. The main supplier near me has stated that they simply cannot get anymore from Australia.

I'm not sure how recent you're talking about, I got a couple from my local Rockler about 6 months ago. I notice Rockler does not list them on their site, perhaps they were only available locally. Could Australian government have instituted an export ban, perhaps based on some percieved rarity of the nuts?

Very unlikely, they are not rare, I just have to drive a few kilometres to collect as many as I want. It depends on the variety of Banksia and where in Oz they grow as to the size, mine are up to
250mm long x 100mm diameter.This site is interesting
