DeWalt DW738 and DW739 Bandsaws - Advice needed

I'm currently looking to upgrade from my benchtop bandsaw (it makes SUCH hard work of cutting a nice bowl blank from decent hardwoods! - not to mention noisy). I've got my eye on the DeWalt DW738 (dual speed) and DW739 (variable speed) bandsaws. Does anyone have one of these - what do you think of 'em? Are they powerful enough to cut 3" or 4" thick bowl blanks out of ash/oak/beech etc comfortably - I don't want to simply replace one which isn't up to the job with another similar one. I'd put myself in the category of keen hobbyist using it intermittently a couple of times a week so I'm not likely to be thrashing it to death for 8 hours a day. Are there any others which you'd recommend - remembering that I'm in the UK and we don't often see Grizzly's and Jet's over here? Key requirements include cost (I can get the two machines mentioned for £210 - £250) and space - mustn't be too big.

Thanks in advance as always

There are no Dewalt bandsaws in the US version of the catalog, so I don't think any of us accross the pond will have much info on them. I use the Delta 9 inch table top bandsaw. I have cut blanks up to 3+ inches on it. I do relief cuts around the circle before cutting it out and it works just fine. You can't push it too hard or be in a hurry, but it gets the job done.

Peter,

I've a feeling they're not manufactured for the US market. Have a look at the following sites:

Bruce,

Thanks for that. In case you're interested you'll find pictures/specs etc. on the DeWalt models available at the following sites:

I have the floormodel (8hundredsomething), and I regret the buy every time I use it. It is noisy, impossible to adjust the band for a straight cut in anything thicker than about 2", the table is thin and wobbly, the mitregauge and the other (ripfence?) are superlight aluminum toys.

If you can find a saw with castmetal table and an adjustable lower wheel, go for it. DeWalt is currently owned by Black and Decker, and instead of raising the quality of said company, the reputation of DeWalt is going down the drain.

I think my saw is built in China, with an Italian lightweight motor.

Look twice.
