Dive belt durability.

After 10 months I had to replace the drive belt on my variable speed Taiwan made lathe. Thanks to NewWoodworker.com I was able to get the right instruction for replacing the broken belt. I was surprise to learn that not too many manuals provide procedures to replace the belt on a variable speed drive. I replaced the (black) belt with one Made in the US by Gates. Its quality looks far superior than the OEM belt. While shopping for the belt I learned that the tool rental shops are using a Gates produced belt that is colored green and cost more that twice the price of the black one. I am planning on storing a spare belt and I wonder if these green drive belts are worth the extra money. I

Those green cloth covered belts are generally for lawn care products (lawnmoweres, etc.) My guess is they are designed to work in a very dirty environment.

Hi Peter, What do you mean by stock belts. Is it the belt sold by the Jet dealer or is it a US made. The OEM belt that came with my Taiwanese lathe was low in quality compared to Gates. Time will tell if the belt made by Gates US will outlast the Taiwan OEM. Busy Bee Tools where I purchased the lathe were asking $10.00 CAD plus shipping for the belt. I got one (industry Number

3L240, [3/8" X 24"]) made in the US at the Local CarQuest auto parts for $6.25 CAD

stock belts last me about 5 months before they are

It looks like you have the drive belt situation ironed out. However, I would like to share the following information with you: If its a 23" long belt that you have as stock belt. An American made one can be purchased under the Industry Number 3L230 (Gates 1230) for about $6.50 USD or less. I just downloaded Gates Power Transmission Manual (250 pages) and they have a section on Metric belts intended for machinery's made overseas. They told me that the green belt is made with Dupont "Aramid" and claimed that its stronger than steel.

I've tried to locate a Gates belt, but can't find the

like the way the Reeves drive responds to either. The
