Thanks guys. The file gets inserted through a hole you drill in the end. I did not show it although it gets mentioned at the first. Maybe I will drill a hole in one and put a file in it. I need to handle a chain saw file anyway :-)

A previous poster said he had not seen wooden file handles for years. Most files I buy are without handles and most of those that do, have poor quality handles - exception is Sandvik - so I much prefer to make my own and throw the plastic into the recycle bin.

To make the hole for the tang, I use 2 or 3 different size drill bits, drilled so the smallest is deepest, depending on the size and taper of the tang to ensure a snug fit.

The handle shown is suitable for up to about 300 mm, larger files have a bigger tang and need a larger ferrule, I use 19 mm or 25mm id pipe for these and increase the handle diameter appropriately. I have a couple of 600 mm files, they have a big tang.

I will have to try the shape shown on your site, up to now I usually have a rounded ridge at the file end about 6mm larger than the handle diameter immediately behind it, tapering evenly to the rear to about the same diameter as the ridge, with a semi-circular end, which I find comfortable to use.

Thank you for all the information on your site, it is very helpful.

======>I have done similarly. Do you then epoxy the file in the handle?

I guess it would be quite the trick to make the biggest hole the deepest. ;)

I've used copper pipe fittings on tool handles. If there's a tang, I like the adapters that neck down from 1" or 3/4" to 1/2" or even 3/8". Looks a little fancier than a straight piece.
