Firewood Bowl

Oct 23, 2009 4 Replies

Finishing one of the cracked sweetgum bowls. It developed a 1/8 inch crack from the rim down halfway of the bowl. I soaked it in glue/water mix and allowed it to dry. Pictures on ABPW. The white arrow points to the remains of the crack. It has been sanded and has one coat of tung oil sealer.

Too beautiful to give up on.. When you say glue/water mix, are you talking about a plastic resin glue that you mix with water, a diluted yellow glue or something else..? Thanks.. -Jim

Must be yellow glue.. You're wanting the wood to swell..

Yes. I bought a gallon and mixed it half & half with water. Soaked

24-48 hours. Most wound up with a hairline mark, one bowl showed no improvement at all. One I finish turned and sanded and never found any sign of the initial crack.
