From A Bowl, To A Sconce

Hi All,

Been awhile since I posted, but have been busy with melons, strawberries, and blackberries. I was putting the finishing touches on spalted maple bowl tonite when the screws in the glue block worked loose and the bowl came off the lathe at 3,000 rpms. What a sight. After changing my pants, I sawed it in half and made a sconce for the wall, with the only whole part left. Second bowl in two days, to do this. Oh well, if you don't screw up, you ain't doin nothin. (laughing)

Welcome back Cody,

If you aren't already using them, try sheet metal screws. The large threads with smaller shanks hold very well in wood. I like # 12 or 14's.

Even if those bowls are only 4" to 5" in diameter, 3,000 RPM is kind of fast. If in doubt, slow down. That Mercury has a vari-speed doesn't it? It might be less "exciting" but try some of the slower setting! :-)

Glad to hear you are back to turning! Hope that you are feeling better! Slow down and enjoy!

James: The uses for LDD are myriad. Isn't it handy to be able to pre-soak your laundry while you turn bowls, etc., that won't split or warp!*G*

Strawberries were down to $0.20 per ounce

Is $3.20 a pound a bad price?????

That diabetes "thingy" is a hard one to "whoop". I'm still working on mine.......have been led to not expect a cure. Or, do you just mean its now under control? Whichever, good for you.
