How to sharpen gouges on bench sander

Any suggestions as to how to go about sharpening gouges on a bench grinder. I have a Ryobi 4 x 36" and can stand it vertical also. Anyone suggest freehanding it or better to set up a jig or something else. I currently have 80 grit set up.... would this work or need 120 grit? Would you clean up the inside of the gouge with a dowel and sandpaper? Any web sites with pics apprectiated.

-TIA

The folks that know who do this either mount the sander (to a wall) so that the belt runs up, or, depending on the sander design, flip a belt so that the sander runs up without needing to mount it oddly. They use blue belts with Zirconium as part of the grit mixure. Grit choice varies

- depends what you need to do. Jig or not jig varies.
