I made a mandrel to turn carrots and avacado nuts, and I'm making a chess set, the lathe is a hand drill, tied down in a workmate with a shoelace(its like a workbench thats a clamp in the middle) and a block of wood under it, the mandrel has teeth pointing in.:)

Use a band clamp to improve rigidity.

if i had one... and besides carrot doesnt need a brace, I did a bit of wood in it, but all i have is light hand gouges, I ended up using my pocket knifes as a skew, and then the drill got too hot. so that was the end of that.
