Leif, LDD Question

When taking the piece out of the LDD do you wash it off with clean water, rub it down or what? I've got an Oak piece and it is just plain slick / slimly. I can just see the entire shop being slimed if I stick it on the lathe. It is a hollow form so getting inside to wipe it while possible will be a job.

Hi, Stuart. I generally let the piece drip off the excess LDD on a piece of hardware cloth set over the sacred LDD vessel. I then use paper toweling to wipe off whatever LDD I can. I then mount it on the lathe and put some toweling over the bed and run the lathe at slow rpm's and again use paper toweling to get more of the LDD off -- shouldn't be much at this point. When I have a deep hollowing, I use a pair of long surgical forceps with paper clamped in the jaws and that will pick up whatever LDD remains. The finish turning and sanding inside the lathe will further remove solution. Yes, you might get a bit of splatter. In my woodshop that is not a big issue to me. I finish my turnings on the lathe and I have a window in back of the lathe that has a stripe on it from the LDD and some finishes. Some turners use a plastic drop cloth or an old shower curtain to protect the shop. I have seen the same stripes on other turners' walls. Hope this helps,

Leif

How long would you soak a piece of hardwood (Red gum) about 5" square by 4"?

Deb!

There seem to be a number of variations to this theme and the only thing I can say is try them and see what works. LDD isn't the only way -- just the best!*G* Perhaps being a relative novice to woodturning is a help. The reactionaries to this process tend to be experienced, grumpy old men who will persist in their old ways until the final trump is blown! *G*

L. Thorvaldson Sir: Just because making the same turning mistakes for fifty years doesn't constitute experience there's no reason for insulting us grumpy old men.

*********************************************** To our American members: Don't forget this is the last day until next year to block telemarketing of the LDD process. Contrary to what you have read on rcw, it is not exempted. Arch
