"New" design

All kinds of things similar. Search other woodturning forums which allow pictures for inspiration. Believe the current terminology is "winged" bowls, though you might find other square things which strike your fancy. This guy does 'em the way I do, or vice-versa.

Square, rectangle and free-form wings are fairly common. I can't seem to recall having seen any that were machined to the shapes you mention ... although it DOES sound like an interesting twist.

Robert has already got me pawing at the paddock to make some odd-shaped oil lamps ... might as well add these ideas to the pile.

I have seen a number of pictures through the years, of the type of turnings you refer to, you'd have to go through many links and look at a lot of yearly expositions etc.,to find some.

I do have a link here that has at least some out of the ordinary turnings, from a large number of turners, some you can find sites from, anyway here's some inspiration.

well, depending on what you mean by "bowl", here is one example:

Terry Scott has some work I've seen that has 3 wings in one direction and the fourth opposite direction. When you think about that you begin to wonder "how did he do that?" My best guess is that he turns 8 wings (2 sets) and then carves away the extras.

Couldn't find a link to some of his work except on the WoW site.

Hi Kevin, You might want to try turning a vessel on the bias as started and promoted by Tom Crabb of Virginia. He has demoed at AAW national symposia and authored articles. I'm sure someone here can give you specific references and advice. I haven't turned one, but think I'll give it a try. That noise you'll hear will be my blank hitting the shop wall. :)

Turn to Safety, Arch Fortiter

I have one, but no camera (I tend to have bad luck with them!) The bowl in question was turned round by me, and my wife sanded it 8 or twelve sides into it with my belt sander, and then used a dremel to make smaller facets surrounding those.

It looks okay. With some care, something like that could be really great (in this case, I don't feel that she really took the sanding far enough- but it was her project, so it is what it is!)

Check out the colin album on the yahoo bowlturners group. I think he has what you may be looking for. He actually has some templates on his website for several modifications to the basic design.
