One step closer to playtime

I haven't had much of an opportunity to do any turning for the last couple of months, as first it was process the wood I had collected, and then change the layout of the workshop, To those of you in the US think of 'outhouse', OK its a little larger but not much :)

Well we have just about completed the new layout, and then its get the machinery into place.

On top of that a few weeks back I bought another lathe, only a little bit bigger than my last, but for the equivalent of US$10 it was worth it. Though it was an odd beast with M33 thread, but it did have an MT2 taper so after the addition of an adapter to 1x 8tpi I can use all my accessories, but there was one small issue, but from my view a good issue, the lathe was 380V 3 phase. So a little research and I found a company in the UK that provides a 240V single phase to 3 phase converter. It arrived yesterday, so I spent the evening with the motor in bits, converting it from Star to Delta configuration., and connecting up the controller. TADA. I now have a nice little lathe with speeds from 0-???? Well, we don't know yet as we need a tacho to check it but it could go as high as

4000rpm , and for a few pennies more I also got reverse facility, though I still have to modify the lathe to lock any attachments so they don't unwind.

All I have to do now is hope the weather holds though were expecting 28C on Sunday, not bad when you think we had snow only a couple of weeks back. Then its back to complete the last stage of the re-organisation and hopefully by the end of the week all will be in its place and ready to use.

All I need to do then is sell off my surplus equipment, you know 2 spare band saws. 2 spare pillar drills, spare lathe and other items, and I should have lots of room for more wood. Though if I can squeeze the wood in I could keep the spares too :)

So all in all By June I should be in a position to play again

Wow, John. Sounds like an awful lot of work! But the rewards will be many, no doubt.

I hope you stay in touch here and let us know how things are going "across the pond".

AS Nailshooter said, sounds like a bit of work - but you sound as if you love the challenge of making something unconventional work - almost as much as playing with it afterward:-) .

Best of everything.
