OT: Glow In The Dark Products

Remember how we all laughed and jeered?

[TAIPEI, Taiwan - Pigs may not be able to fly just yet, but at least three of them glow. Taiwanese researchers said Friday they have bred the pigs with a fluorescent material in a move they hope will benefit the island's stem cell research effort.

The fluorescent pigs are green from inside out, including their hearts and internal organs, said Wu Shinn-Chih, assistant professor of animal science at the prestigious National Taiwan University.

From the outside, the pigs appear to be bathed in a light green tint, particularly their eyes, mouths and knuckles.

Wu said the pigs are bred by injecting their embryos with fluorescent green protein taken from jelly fish.

Pigs are commonly used to study human diseases, and Wu believes his technique will be useful in helping researchers monitor tissue changes over time.]

Remember, a tree takes up water continuously while in leaf. Get the dye dissolved, and you might be surprised how quickly the process would make a glow-bowl with an existing tree.

Quick search didn't turn it, but there was a commercial concern doing just that kind of thing with turnings from aspen.

So, I think the obvious question here is, "What good is a glow-in-the-dark pig?" Stem cell research is one thing, but a glow-in-the-dark pig?

Actually, Derek, somebody already does this, with dyes. No mention of GITD dyes, but if you go to

formatting link
you'll see the species and the colors that they do use. Some of them are pretty startling! I imagine that GITD dyes would be possible, but those products, except for radium and other radioactives, lose their GITD properties over time, so I don't know as it would be worth it.

you need glow in the dark pigs so you can have glow in the dark ham. you need glow in the dark ham so you can find the proscuto when you need it for a midnight snack without losing your dark adaptation which you need to navigate the dark house.

And, glow in the dark bacon would be great for camping trips, no?

and how about glow in the dark lard to put on your refried beans, so you can have glow in the dark buritos (can you see where this is going .... lets not go there....)

As I recall, this, or another project like it, was with an eye toward colored wood. (?)

Let me post this again. Either my posts aren't getting through, or I'm in EVERYbody's nut-filter. Anyhow, from an earlier post:

I saw your post, but did not check out the link until today. Maybe I'm having a bad weekend or something - what with complaining about rude customers - but this just stinks. Why on earth would somebody do this to a tree?! SACRILEGE! OUTRAGE!! sputter, sputter sputter ...

Sorry, I was wrong. Some questions DO NOT need to be asked. :-)

It does seem to kind of defeat the purpose of using _wood_, I suppose. But after all, people paint, stain and cover wood with all sorts of things. They _are_ pretty bright colors, though. : ) Maybe stuff for kids' toys.

I looked at the stuff for sale - seemed to be just pens. And they looked just like the plastic (?) pen kits I've seen at Woodcraft. Im not sure they'd even feel like wood.

Wonder if GITD bacon would taste like bacon.
