Re: Jet vs Grizzly

I think the Grizzly is a bit cheaper than the Jet? I noticed both

> have a swivel head for outboard turning of larger bowls.

We had both (12x36 Jet and 14x40 G1067Z), side by side, at the sunapee craft fair. They're basically the same lathe, except that the Griz has the moveable headstock and larger size, and the Jet has the gap in the bed. Oh, the color is different too ;-)

The only annoying thing about the G1067Z is the 1x12 spindle thread. You can get all the accessories for it, but you can't "just move" to someone else's lathe for demos or whatnot.

As for quality, it took two guys to move the Grizzly, but only one to move the Jet. But then, maybe that one guy was just showing off.

It sounds like he may be referring to the G5979, which has the swivel head. I have one, and am pretty pleased with it. It has a 1"x8TPI headstock, which is a bit more common than the 1x12. I haven't seen the G8691, but the G5979 appears to have a beefier, sturdier bed and tailstock to boot, as well as a toolrest that has one more point of articulation.

The two largest downsides to the G5979 over some of the more expensive competition are:

- it doesn't have an indexing spindle.

- only 1/2 HP motor.

There's also one other downside, the threaded portion of the spindle is longer than 1", so it's a bit too long to fit a Nova chuck. I found that out AFTER I had purchased the chuck, so I went to Lowe's and picked up a thick 1" washer for 59 cents to use as a spacer, and that fit the bill just fine. If it caused any amount of runout or inconsistency, I certainly haven't been able to notice.

I bought the Grizzly. Negatives were 1/2 hp motor, motor in the way for close to spindle large diameter turning, no reverse, mechanical speed variability was sometimes difficult. Basically, all stamped out of the ssame chinese factory. Two months later, I bought the Oneway 24X36. No comparison here! Course, more than 10 times the money two but I do love that oneway!!!

I burned out the motor on my Jet after 18months from purchase. i called jet expected to have to purchase a new motor. they said the motor should not have burned out and sent me a new one. i've had nothing but EXCELLENT service from jet, and discovered the hard way that the 'cheaper' sometimes is not.
